Apple’s first foldable iPhone is drawing praise for its sleek engineering and nearly invisible screen crease — but critics say its hefty design, camera compromises and uneven app support make the $1,999 gadget a tough sell for most consumers.
On top of that, early reports indicate the pricey device may be prone to crack.
The iPhone Duo hits stores Friday after drawing an 8.8 out of 10 from Engadget and 7 out of 10 from both The Verge and WIRED.
Engadget called Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable market “worth the wait,” while The Verge described it as a “messy, expensive, good time.”
Meanwhile, Wired called it an “astonishingly good first foldable.”
The device unfolds to reveal a 7.6-inch matte display that dramatically reduces glare, while its innovative hinge operates smoothly and holds the screen at different angles.

MY PHONES COST ME $20 EACH-—HAVE 3 IN HOUSE.
NEVER GETTING SUCKED INTO CELLPHONE HYSTERIA/MANIA.
COMPLAIN ABOUT THE “COST OF LIVING”????
YOU HAVE BETTER CHOICES.
Apple has always overpriced and underdelivered their products.
I don’t like dual screen phones, but you don’t have this problem with Samsung.
And you have a caps-lock key.
This is specifically for those who need to show off to others.
“Look at me...I have a 2 thousand dollar phone and you don’t. I’m better than you!”
better not have any debris near that hinge when closing it....
LOL
And they buy a new one every year and are on them constantly. They are also the ones that are likely to talk very loud on them so everyone can be annoyed. They are also the ones that will take a call at a cash register and hold up the whole line because they are so important.
Cell phones can be an addiction like gambling, booze or drugs.
From personal experience, everything you said is absolutely true.
I get my phones off Amazon for under $300... current one is 5 years old and works fine.
Spending 2K for a cellphone by Apple is nuts. I guess it depends mostly on how much you think a phone should cost & how much you can spend. I have cheapie(not Apple) I bought years ago that is not ideal, but is still on the job.
Cell phones are crack pipes they both will drive you crazy when the have a problem.
My folding Samsung didn’t survive the warranty. I sent it back under warranty and it failed again within a few minutes.
Then they charged me the out-of-warranty repair fee!
All got resolved after about ten days, but it was annoying nonetheless...
I well remember when phones were the property of the phone company, cost nothing, and service was around $20, if that, per month. We communicated enough, seemingly, back then. That people are paying $2,000 so that big brother can better collect every possible bit of information about them is insane. This is all about conspicuous consumption and one-upping all the other girls. I remember a young lady, as an unemployed 21 year old student, bought a $1,200 iPhone a few years back. “But is has a really really great camera!” was I think the ‘reason’. I would bet there have been three or more new phones since then, each collecting more and more information about her every action.
Those are Android/Google phones which are designed to collect personal data to sell ads. Apple prides its self on protecting user privacy and does not collect personal information.
Didn’t know that! Thanks.
“and service was around $20, if that, per month”
IIRC, when I was at college in the 70s, calling my Mom was 25 cents for the first minute. One gal I knew ran up a $400 phone bill her first month in college.
In the 90s, I was TDY to Turkey. Calling my family in the UK was $5 for the first minute and, IIRC, then $1/minute after that. We limited ourselves to 5 minutes/call.
Now? People can use a variety of apps on their cell phone to call people in other countries for free.
And my Apple SE3 was, IIRC, under $400. It has 2 years on it and will probably be with me for another 5-6 years. Among other things I use it when jogging to record my distance and time jogging, while another free app lets me tune my baritone horn with great precision.
Cell phones are great. They don’t take over someone’s life unless the person lets it happen.
I’ve got an SE too, and I’m quite satisfied. People often comment on how small it is, and I show them how easily I can slip it into my pocket and then they get it. No cover, just small and slick communication device. And yes, it’s amazing that we can use them to talk or even video chat with people all around the planet if we want to for a fraction of the cost of such service in the past. That said, and perhaps it’s just wistful nostalgia, the idea that an overseas call was a big deal made the world somehow a little more special. If someone were on vacation in Europe, for example, one didn’t usually hear from them for the duration of the trip. And they were left alone to soak in the magic, with no connection back home to remind them of their reality. Those days are long, long gone....
