Republican Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is doubling down on a controversial ad featuring his Democratic opponent Amy Acton’s estranged mother, but it seems to be catastrophically backfiring on him as his odds of winning the election have cratered.
In the ad, Donna Arthur, the candidate’s estranged mother who lost custody of her and her younger brother when Acton was 12, lambasts her daughter as a “liar” and urges viewers not to vote for her. Acton has publicly spoken about her troubled childhood for years, well before she ran for office, including the reason her mother lost custody: documented neglect and abuse, including Acton’s stepfather sexually abusing her from the ages of 9 to 12. Arthur sided with her husband against her daughter and the two have not spoken since she lost custody.
The ad drew swift and vociferous condemnation from a chorus of bipartisan voices, with many prominent conservatives declaring the ad made them more sympathetic towards Acton. Her campaign shared a statement and then a video message from her brother denouncing Ramaswamy for “platforming their estranged and abusive mother,” and National Review and other media outlets dug up the legal documents confirming Acton’s story, all of which increased the criticism of Ramaswamy.
It was not initially clear who paid for the ad, as it was circulating online without a disclaimer (apparently provided directly to conservative influencers, many of whom declared it a “bombshell” and devastating “October surprise”). The Ramaswamy campaign issued a statement that neither denied nor condemned the ad, instead attacking Acton as a “serial fabulist,” but the campaign and even the candidate himself did admit it was their ad a few hours later.
Ramaswamy campaign manager Jonathan Ewing told Axios the campaign was dropping $4 million to televise the ad across Ohio and declared “this is a campaign-ending moment for Amy Acton.”
Ewing may be right about it being a “campaign-ending moment,” but for his own candidate, not Acton.
Ramaswamy was already slipping behind Acton in the polling, with CNN data guru Harry Enten marveling at Ramaswamy’s “worst this century” polling among Ohio independents the day before the ad was shared.
The latest numbers from prediction market Polymarket show Ramaswamy got a minor, one-point bump on Tuesday morning, around the time the ad first started spreading online, but then his numbers cratered amid the bipartisan backlash as the day went on and reporting confirmed Acton’s story.
Polymarket’s political gamblers currently give Ramaswamy only a 22% chance of winning, nudging up from his low of 21% on Wednesday afternoon. The graph shows Ramaswamy was already on a downward trajectory and then his numbers plummeted as outrage about the ad grew throughout the day. Acton currently has a 79% chance of winning, according to Polymarket.

Fake polls by fake media. The betting polls are even worse.
Silly. If anything, this helped Vivek, who will win by 2.
Silly. If anything, this helped Vivek, who will win by 2.
Instead of spending money on ads, pols can put money to swing odds.
Just can’t let go of your TDS and hate for all things conservative.
We get it, you are a lying liberal. Remember Clinton had a 95% chance of winning the 2016 election, that is what we think of all the pollsters you quote.
And off all rags, Mediate, good grief
“Ramaswamy campaign manager Jonathan Ewing told Axios the campaign was dropping $4 million to televise the ad across Ohio and declared “this is a campaign-ending moment for Amy Acton.”
Mr. Ewing may be absolutely right on this one, but smart people double down and the Ramaswamy campaign should consider spending $8 million to televise the ad across Ohio.
Worst ad and decision by a politcal campgain. Attacking a child sex abuse victim. Genius level.
Democrat early vote in Ohio has collapsed, ESPECALLY IN BLACK AREAS.
If it blows his chances it will at least not be as bad as him losing a WH bid. We gotta watch out for these wordsmiths who talk a big game. Indians are particularly argumentative in an off-putting way. I’ve experienced it at work.
If red state Ohio sees fit to elect him he’ll have 6-10 years to prove or disprove(4 years) his WH bonafides.
“Fake polls by fake media.”
As I posted, President Trump has cited Harry Enten’s poll analysis approvingly.
With these odds it's probably a good top to put ones bet money on the red team.
Actually it’s a way to fund their campaign too. Doing the old pump and dump. Also as long as they sell their position before it’s over (like on election day) they get their money back (might make a profit or lose a little bit).
“Democrat early vote in Ohio has collapsed”
What’s your source?
If you google “democratic early voting ohio,” the first story will be found at
https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/11/politics/early-voting-midterms-ohio-democratic-shift-vis
After the first days of early voting in Ohio, a state that could help determine control of the Senate, there are clear signs Democrats are more enthusiastic to vote.
So far, affiliated Democrats make up larger shares of pre-election voters than they did two years ago, even in the most Republican parts of the state.
At this point in 2024, Republicans had a 30-percentage point lead over Democrats in counties that voted for President Donald Trump by 20 points or more, according to data from the Ohio Secretary of State. This year, that’s shrunk to just five points.
Voters in other counties have also shifted, including in the counties that voted most strongly for former Vice President Kamala Harris, where they’re about 25 points more Democratic.
That’s based on the latest available set of statewide data, from after early voting on Thursday. There’s evidence from the counties for which later data is available that Friday was slightly better for Republicans.
Idk, someone thought this ad would be a real kill shot, but it crossed a line and turned people off. Made Acton look like a real victim of ugly politics. Given that most voters go by transient emotion rather than reason, it could be a fatal error.
Did they know she was a child sex abuse victim when they got this from the mother?
Perhaps they should have done their due diligence and looked into her more. Yes. But they might not have known they were stepping on a landmine. They were probably giddy when they got the mother of a candidate willing to bash her publicly.
Also, you know that the ad must have scared them if her brother publicly air the family dirty laundry in order to try to do damage control.
I'm sure he isn't going to be asked about this repulsive ad
That is such bs, i.e., 'I was a lifelong Republican, but because of (fake excuse here) I'm voting Democrat'.
Vivek might have flaws, but Acton is toxic. Right minded people won't forget what she did during the Covid tyranny.

@CynicalPublius
Please ask yourself two questions:
1. When was the last time that pre-election media were predicting huge Democrat losses?
2. When was the last time that pre-election media were NOT predicting huge Republican losses?
Since the pattern is obvious, why do you let it be repeated in your own mind?
This is war. Information war. Fear is the mind killer.
