Mom of 7 fatally struck by train while filming morning run wearing noise-canceling headphones

A mom of seven was fatally struck by a train on her morning run in Arizona — likely because she was in her “own world” filming herself while wearing noise-cancelling headphones, according to her family.

Thelma Candelaria, 47, had started filming her morning runs around Eloy as part of a health kick that coincided with her also getting baptized, her grieving family told KTVK.

She shared her last clip early Thursday, where she told her Instagram followers she was taking running “seriously” as she flashed a peace sign and gave a thumbs up.

She ran and then filmed a train blasting its horn as it went by — before being hit by another train heading the opposite way...

That train had also blasted its horn in warning — but Candelaria was seemingly oblivious while wearing pink noise-cancelling headphones, according to her daughter Alaisha Candelaria.

When I was in high school the exact same thing happened to a member of the track team. When the train going east passed, he ran across the train track and was hit by the west bound train.

I went for a run, walk this morning..I was no where near a train track, was not filming myself nor listening to music. When I’m in a walk, run..want to ensure I hear & aware of what’s going on in front, behind me.
How & why was she this close to a train??

Trains are very predictable. You see those shiny rails? That is where they are. Stay at least 10 feet away from those rails at all times and it will be rare that a train leaves those rails to hunt you down. Unless you insulted it's engineer. Trains are very sensitive about such things.

The current noise-cancelling headphones from Apple are no joke. I thought my refrigerator died when I put them on, but it just suddenly removed the hum. I’ve missed phone calls sitting a few feet from the phone. I don’t think I’ll ever try them out in public because it decreases situational awareness so much. I hope the nanny state doesn’t step in and nerf them for being too good.

So the headphones locked out any sound.
But the next voice she heard...

Yes, the wife is played by Nancy Davis, later married to Ronald Reagan.

Train. Car. Dog. Mugger…or worse.

You shouldn’t cover your ears with anything that could make you unaware of your surroundings while out walking, jogging, or running.

How come the daughter is so cheerful and nonchalant about it while describing the story to the TV station?

I wasn’t thinking of posting this until you said “leaves the rails to hunt you down.”

The Final Destination film series has the theme that death is overpoweringly strong and hates being cheated by heroic people who save a person’s life. No one can stop the sequence of the order of people dying. Very depressing.

Children are taught at a young age to stay out of the road, and the numerous passing cars are a constant reminder. Train tracks aren’t as common, and people aren’t used to them. And most of the time there is never a train on them, so they don’t think there is much of a danger. If any. “I thought they weren’t used anymore”.

There is a park near Seattle where every year it seemed a person (late teens to 20-something) was getting killed by a train as they would take short cuts down and across the tracks to get to the park along the water. I think they ended up fencing off a huge section of the tracks and putting up more signs warning of the danger. It was usually the commuter trains that would get them - faster and quieter.

Nope, she has 7 children, as the title of the article states.
