On Monday, August 24th, 2026, an deputy of the Eagle County Sheriffs Department shot and stopped a charging cinnamon color phase black bear near the River Run Apartment Complex. The bear was an adult with two cubs.
From the video, it appears the deputy drew and fired the first shot in less than a second, with three followup shots following in fractions of a second after that. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office released the body camera video on September 8th, 2026
Watching the video, it is obvious these are human habituated, food conditioned bears. They have no fear of humans. It is highly likely some person or persons had been feeding these bears. This produced an extremely dangerous situation. Tom Smith, the famous bear researcher and self-acknowledged lover of bears, in an interview on Youtube, (about minute 37) stated about problem bears:
… the ones that are down here causing problems in the villages. You could cull them out, and quite frankly, If I was king of the West, when they are down there eating garbage, sorry, I’d just euthanize them.
Valerius Geist, another highly trained and credentialed animal behavior biologist, who, unlike Smith, is a hunter, takes an opposite view. Tom Smith, when talking about problem bears which have become habituated to surviving on human provided food inside human towns and villages, is correct.

Does anybody remember that deputy sheriff down in Florida Who dispatched an escaped crazy elephant with a 9mm? There’s film out there... and I say film, because I think it probably was that long ago, anyway, he pumped about 4 or 5 high capacity magazines into that thing, and it dropped. I was amazed.
Clarification:
To clarify, Tom Smith actually said, to effect, he has not seen any peer reviewed papers which show that hunting bears reduces bear/human conflicts more than the proportion of bears removed from the population. It is not quite the same thing as saying “hunting does not reduce human/bear conflicts”.
I recall being told of a Hawaii police officer dispatching an elephant with his service revolver, with one shot to the head.
It was supposed to be on film, quite a while back.
Instead of calling State Game officials they provoked her into charging. Now the cubs will be put down. That’s just great, well done morons.
What would “State Game officials” do?
“Relocating” does not work. The bears either become someone else’s problem, or if put in another bear’s territory they fight for territory and are killed or starve.
The most common result of “relocating” is the bears come back.
Once bears become addicted to human food, they have to be put down.
“A fed bear is a dead bear” as the management professionals say.
The cubs went to a rehab center.
I was impressed by how quickly he was able to transition from the beanbag shotgun to a pistol.
They are trained to do that.
He should have went up to them and killed all three of them.
It was just a waste of time and effort trying to haze them away.
WHERE THEY WILL BE FED BY HUMANS
I wonder if the other bears will riot?
