The Dodgers’ Pursuit of History Ended in Stunning Failure
Sports Illustrated ^ | 10/16/2026 | Ryan Phillips

The Dodgers spent the last several years building what was supposed to be a roster so loaded it couldn't possibly lose in the postseason. But on Thursday night, a campaign that began as a chase for baseball's first three-peat in a quarter-century ended as one of its most spectacular failures.

----SNIP---

Los Angeles’s spending also broke records. When factoring in the team’s CBT payroll and luxury tax payments, the roster cost more than $616 million this season, nearly $150 million more than the second-place Mets ($468.9 million). The disparity was so great, the idea of a salary cap in baseball gained renewed momentum. Given all the advantages the Dodgers had, anything short of a World Series would have been a disappointment. What happened in the NLCS went far beyond that.

The Brewers are like the monster in a horror movie...you think he’s been killed, but he comes back again and again and again. They never give up.

2005 White Sox.

Do they still play at Comiskey Field?

I’m pretty sure this is why the Electoral College was invented.

20-20 Hindsight

Several factors worked against the Dodgers' three-peat:

Roster Age: Buying up high-priced talent means acquiring established veterans (Mookie, Freddie, Teo, Tucker, Ohtani. Kiké is 35, Muncy 36, Rojas 37. Aging veterans slow down, injure more easily, and gradually diminish in performance. (The Dodgers have youngsters Pages, Rushing and DePaula and desperately need more young blood--but this is the franchise with the most Rookie of the Year Awards, so....)

Fatigue: This was their third league-championship series in-a-row, reducing their recovery period between seasons.

Pressure: Expectations were sky-high, a monkey on their back all year long.

It all just became too much.

The question then becomes out of how many? If one counts all existing MLB franchises it’s two out of 30. However only the Astros in 2013 and Brewers in 1998 have ever switched leagues so only they could ever achieve this feat in the first place but I guess it’s still notable trivia.

Do you have a dog in this fight?

Growing up in Philly, it’s always been the Phillies… However, I’m also a New York Yankees fan (imagine growing up in Philly with that hanging over you lol).

I kind of want to see the Brewers get it now… They’ve never had a World Series win

No dog at all. 5 teams have never won a world series. Brewers, Rays, Padres, Mariners and Rockies. Mariners are the only team never to have played in one.

I like clever, expressive phrases and metaphors, but I also dislike stale, misapplied, or vague terms and concepts that fall apart under scrutiny.

In our example, saying that a team won because they “wanted it more” implicitly raises an expectation that a description will follow of how that team practiced harder, were resilient, and tried and made exceptional plays. If so, that ought to be said and grounded in facts in order to advance the reader's understanding of what happened and of how the world works. Subtly, the reader is being told that winning at sports and in life requires not just desire but also determined effort and sacrifice toward a goal.

Or maybe a team won because of being lucky or unusually talented, which offers different and harder lessons about how success is sometimes not earned or that wanting something more and working harder does not always lead to success. If you are beaten by a home run from a dissolute Babe Ruth nursing a hangover there is a story to tell even as greater effort and desire can be said to have deserved a better result -- but maybe not that year.

I mean this not as a criticism but as an explanation of my comment. On reflection, you may agree with me. Woe if you do because you will find that the scrutiny you apply to what you write and read becomes more exacting. Do that as a matter of habit and you will find in time that attention to clarity and logic in expression fosters a better understanding of what you read and greater comprehension of ideas, facts, and events.
