Trump approves tiny ‘cars of the very near future’

President Trump said Friday he had granted approval for “tiny cars” to be built in the United States, a move that would expand the availability of similar smaller vehicles that are popular in Asia.

“I have just approved TINY CARS to be built in America. Manufacturers have long wanted to do this, just like they are so successfully built in other countries,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “They can be propelled by gasoline, electric, or hybrid.

“These cars of the very near future are inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient and, quite simply, AMAZING!!! START BUILDING THEM NOW!”

There’s a modern (but retro design) Crosley radio sitting across the room. I never use it, but the prepper in me wants a radio around in case all the networks go down.

“These cars of the very near future are inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient...”

When a light car hits or is hit by a heavier vehicle, the smaller vehicle absorbs much more of the physical force. According to safety research from the National Safety Council, being hit by a vehicle that weighs 1,000 pounds more increases the risk of death for the occupant of the smaller car by about 47%.

Many subcompacts and minicars historically perform poorly in specialized safety tests, such as small overlap crashes or side impacts with taller barriers, which can allow the steering column or vehicle frame to intrude into the driver’s space as tiny cars have less physical space (shorter hoods and closer structural boundaries) to absorb impact energy before it reaches the passenger cabin.

Limited Cargo and Seating Space: Interior room is tight, making them unsuited for large families, bulky luggage, or long road trips.

Lower Horsepower and Performance: Smaller engines struggle with slow acceleration, hard passing on highways, and climbing steep inclines, especially when fully loaded. Small or downsized engines often use more fuel than expected in real-world driving. Drivers must rev small engines harder and accelerate more abruptly to keep up with traffic, ruining EPA or lab fuel economy ratings.

Less Comfortable Ride: Short wheelbases and lighter frames can make the ride feel bumpier, noisier, and less smooth over rough pavement than mid-size or full-size vehicles.

Visibility and Road Presence: Because they sit lower to the ground and have a smaller frame, drivers of larger trucks and SUVs may have a harder time spotting them in traffic.

And last but not least, open the sales of a novelty item and the price just went up at least 15% making them competitive with other cars. The people that make them don’t want to step on their other products. They lose money that way so they will have to make it up.

There are still bugs to this.

A couple of older guys around here have the ones that aren’t road legal but they follow the bike rules far far better than the youths with ebikes and scooters. Allows them to get around, get to the park and do errands. Almost wiped out a scooter the other day - shot out across the road without looking.

Here in North Idaho, there are lots of golf carts, ATVs and UTVs on the road and an occasional SmartCar.”

No thanks.... a 70 Buick Electra 225 with a 455 is more to my liking.

>>>Will Trump check to see if He can fit inside one of them ? LOL<<<

I had an older English friend who described a long multi country trip in Europe in what the tiniest European car was in the 50s, it was an amusing story, and he was good at telling stories.

Those Dodge Cars were always my least favorite ride at any State Fair. Everybody else seemed to just luuuv getting smacked around, or shoved to and fro. I hated it.
Strangely enough, my favorite ride (after the roller coaster) was the Tilt-A-Whirl, which is pretty similar to Dodge Cars, except nobody rams into you.

No tiny car can be safe. Yeah, they might not burst into flames or whatever. But, their weight is damning.

Picture a ping pong ball bouncing off a bowling ball. That is about right regarding a tiny car hitting or being hit by a Toy truck.

Now, think about what is going on inside that PPBall or tiny car — one instant you are going north, the next south. Mebbe the car interior does not get crushed. Fine. But, your head is still going north, snapping your neck like a twig.

I saw this years ago when a friend’s wife was driving her sedan with her 3 month old kid in a “safe” baby seat. An arsehole ran the red light and T-boned her at 40mph. She was OK. but the baby was instantly dead.

Yes, size matters. Especially relative size.

My grandmother had a Buick Electra 225 with a 455. Big green boat. It would lay rubber at about half pedal.

I’m hearing about a lot of literally seven foot basketball stars from the next generation. I guess they’ll be left out of the Itty-Bitty Car Parade. Oliver Rioux from Canada is 7’9”. Darius Wabbington of Indiana is 6’ 11”.
This is still rare, but not nearly as rare as perhaps 30 years ago.

Just make them illegal on freeways.

Town cars only.

I could use one in that capacity.

Yep.... had to run meatier tires on the back with offset rims and it would still “light em up”. Was really a beast with the engine highly modified.

My neighbor has one of those mini-trucks that are popular in Asia. Not sure where he got it and I do see him driving it around:

“Asian mini trucks, commonly known as Kei trucks, are generally not legal for street use in California.”

As for micro-cars - I wouldn’t want to be in one of those on the i5 Golden State Freeway - or any other freeway in California with the Big Rigs rolling along at 80 mph - especially considering California gives out “no name” CDLs to anyone with a pulse, including those who don’t speak a word of English.
