A newly released police bodycam video shows the tense moments after a 6-year-old boy shot his teacher at a Virginia school, with the foul-mouthed child gunman challenging the responding officers to a fight, and admitting he stole the gun from his mom.
The video, obtained by The Virginian-Pilot and the Daily Press earlier this week, shows officers responding to a classroom at Richneck Elementary School where the shocking 2023 shooting had occurred, and encountering the boy, who has only been identified in court docs as “JT.”
The teacher who was shot, Abigail Zwerner, and other students had fled the room and were not present as the officers approached. The boy, however, was still there, held by reading specialist Amy Kovac.
“The gun is there,” Kovac is heard telling the cops in the footage from Officer Brian Torrez’s body camera. “He just admitted that he had one… he had one bullet.”
There were actually additional rounds in the clip, but the gun had jammed, The Virginian-Pilot reported.
“Both y’all want a ....ing piece of me, .....?!” the boy yells at the officers before Kovac demands he stop.
The boy shot back, “.... you, ......”
After some back-and-forth, one of the officers asks for the child’s age, to which she responds, “He is 6 years old. He has been on a modified schedule. His mother is to pick him up at 2:30. This is his first week without his mother coming to school with him.”
Kovac said she was the one who called 911 after hearing the gunshot.
“I came down the hall. She had blood,” she added, referring to Zwerner.
The boy became riled up again, saying, “.... you, .....” and giving Kovak the finger.
While speaking with Kovac, Torrez asks if the boy is all right.
“He’s fine,” Kovac replies before turning to the boy and asking, “You fine? Turn around. When you shot the gun, did anything hurt you?”
“No,” the boy answers.
When an additional officer came in and inquired about the gun, the child said, “It’s over there, .....,” according to The Virginian-Pilot.
“Stop,” Kovac says, scolding him. “That’s not how we speak to each other.”
“.... you,” the kid shoots back. “.... you. .... you, ......”
He later admits that he stole the gun from his mom, and challenges the officers to another fight.
“If you want a piece of me, come get it on, .....” the boy says. “I don’t care if you call backup. I don’t care if I go to jail, .....”
“OK, buddy,” a sergeant replies.
The video ends as the boy takes an apparent swipe at Kovac.
“Young man, come here,” the sergeant says. “You’re gonna come with me, son.” “The morning it [happened it] felt like just a regular school day, but I started hearing things, and things started happening that made my fear grow,” she told the TODAY show’s Savannah Guthrie in a 2023 interview. “As the day went on, it grew more. My fear grew more. I remember him pointing the gun at me. I remember the look on his face. I remember the gun going off. I remember feeling something. It was a pretty scary day.”
After ushering the other kids out of the classroom, she passed out in a school office while trying to get help.
“I thought I had died,” she told Guthrie.
Last year, a jury awarded Zwerner $10 million after she sued Parker, the ex-assistant principal, for failing to act on concerns that the boy had brought a firearm to school before the shooting.

Another 10 year old (White) boy was in the same unit once for threatening to run his mother through with a kitchen carving knife because she told him to stop playing a video game that she bought him and instead do his home work.
