A 71-year-old cyclist was killed after he collided with an off-leash dog in Central Park’s East Drive roadway Monday morning, according to the NYPD.
Police said around 8 a.m. they received a call of a cyclist struck near East Drive and 84th Street just steps from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While riding his bike, the man collided with a dog that was unleashed and ran onto the roadway, police said.
The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, fell to the ground and suffered trauma on his head and body. The unidentified man was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and pronounced dead, police said.
Police said the dog wasn’t injured, and both the dog and its owner remained on the scene. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.
Unleashed dogs are allowed in many areas of the park from 6 to 9 a.m., and then from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., according to a guide published by the Central Park Conservancy. However, dogs must always be leashed along the park's drives.
Police told Gothamist the dog was in the park when off-leash dogs are allowed and are not expecting any enforcement actions. But a statement from Central Park Conservancy spokesperson Kat Brady said that the park only serves a "peaceful, joyful respite" in New York if users "hold to the essential agreement of public space: know and follow the rules, and respect your fellow visitors."

I hit a dog on my bike once going fast down a hill on a hot day with my shirt off. Got a lot of road rash on my back and had a lot of German Shepard hair in my spokes, but both of us survived.
He was probably biking too fast and couldn’t stop in time.
“The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet”
Probably would have picked up the dog in time to stop if he didn’t have that Dukakis ‘helmet’ on.
German Shepherd, not German Shepard.

It's obvious he couldn't stop in time, else there wouldn't have been "a crash." Apart from your pathological hatred of cyclists, what makes you think this was "probable"?
I’m sure the sheep being herded don’t care about the spelling.
This is the time New Yorkers would be riding before going to the office. Later in the day might be a better time.
I want to preempt the typo police.
That’s what I thought—he had to be going fast.
I’ve known people who’ve had deer strikes on motorcycles and lived through it.
RE: I want to preempt the typo police.
Got it. They can be ruthless. Hardhearted, cold, selfish and unable to feel human emotions of the people they hurt in forums.
My sister has a beautiful German Shepard
We had axis jump off a hillside and leave hair in the front tire and a friend had a buck jumping his lap on his way to work.
He had the deer in his lap for a hundred feet before he was able to pull over and stop.
He was a legend after that.
6 feet long, 4 inches in diameter, just decided to cross the road right in front of me.
Yes, I got some sprint work in that day. And I was wearing a helmet.
I’ve seen these cyclist go too fast and hit little kids, then act like it was the child’s fault because they were on the bike lane part of the path in the park. Mind you the path is not that wide to start width and it’s not like the guy is racing in the tour d’ France.
The article says the dog ran into the street. It can take only one second for a dog to dart, at speed, from the side into the travel way. The old fella could have had no time at all.
I rode bike until I move to my present location, on a busy 2-lane road with no road shoulders, as it was designed before modern clear zones were required. There’s stretches along Moores Mill where one foot off the edge of the pavement and you’re into a steep, deep ditch.
He was wearing a helmet...never ceases to amaze me this is always listed when it comes to motorcycle or bicycle accidents. This one states he received a head injury... So the helmet didn’t save his life. Then there’s the decapitated motorcyclist who died but was wearing a helmet or was crushed by a truck, had on collision etc..but was wearing a helmet.
What would be the story be if he hit a dog on a leash or God forbid a squirrel?
Ran over a rattlesnake in Colorado on a motorcycle. Similar size. I told the wife I think we just hit a rattlesnake snake. Friend behind me on his bike said that thing tried to strike but you were long gone.
