My understanding, and I’m not saying my understanding is comolete, is that David was intending to be an unjust leader in how he used the census.

God chose David to be king. It was within his purvisw to rule imperfectly. What God demanded was David’s trust in Him because of His protection and selection as king.
God was pretty consistent rewarding leaders who trusted Him.

I call it pattern recognition. Man has a tendency to do the same thing over and over again.

Those in power tend to collect power. They replace their people, when they object, with foreigners. Everything the left does, unjust rulers were doing 3,000 years ago I have no reason to think David was different when he acted on his own.

Of course the idea that power corrupts is well known but there is no clear indication that is what angered God. God wanted David to maintain their relationship and not get sidetracked. God loved David and deserved reciprocality from David.
God was the power that protected Israel and not the numerical strength of their army. This was a reminder.

And maybe part of the reason for the reliance upon God is to prevent the corruption of man in exercising power?

Man is the same everywhere. What he would do if he had the power is the same everywhere. When David was going his way, he was the beginning of that pattern of corruption that eventually takes root when man separates himself from God.
