Malibu speed cameras record 100,000 violations during testing

The City of Malibu has delayed the next phase of its upcoming speed camera program after more than 100,000 speeding violations were recorded in less than 10 days, officials announced Thursday.

The program’s warning period was scheduled to begin in late September but has been pushed back to November as the city continues its traffic study and evaluation of existing speed limits in eastern Malibu, specifically in Carbon Canyon and Tuna Canyon.

...

The cameras that have been installed are collecting preliminary information on speeding activity as the city assesses existing conditions. Drivers may see a camera flash when a speeding violation is detected, but it will not result in a warning or citation during the ongoing testing phase, according to officials.

“The cameras are not currently issuing warnings or citations, accessing driver information from the DMV, or taking enforcement action,” the city stated in the release.

Driving the speed limit is an act of passive aggression. NOBODY drives the speed limit. If you don’t drive AT LEAST 5 MPH over the speed limit the drivers behind you go insane.

I’m not saying that the speed cameras are examples of AI, but more and more surveillance is where AI is taking us.

AI is headed for a confrontation with human nature.

You just know that the city of Malibu is licking their chops on the amount of “revenue” this will extract from citizens.

sometimes it’s fun to watch them lose their minds in the rear view mirror.

other times it’s deadly.

Our local (Maryland) speed cameras are all set to be triggered only at speeds 12 or more mikes above the posted speed limit at their location. Knowing generally where they are allows me to slow down in those zones. In “school zones” I always am already at the speed limit.

That's a fair assessment.

By the same token, traffic lights are AI.

The problem here, is that a database needs to be built and maintained to exempt the wealthy and powerful from data collection and responsibility.

Proof that speed limits are set artificially low, for revenue generation purposes.

The only legitimate way to set a speed limit is the M-85 rule.

Anything else is 100% political interference and social engineering.

Those who live in Malibu are above the mundane rules of mere mortals.

“I thought traffic speed limits were just suggestions.”

The day is coming where one will never be out of the reach of a camera watching them. The frog is slowly boiling.

Last spring, I got a $145 "speeding" ticket for doing 29 mph in a zone that is normally 25 mph but drops to 20 mph when a flashing light comes on. At the exact moment the light came on, I was distracted by a sound in my back seat and glanced backwards. (A bottle of detergent on the floor had tipped over and rolled around when I turned onto the road with the camera.)

The 25 mph speed limit is ridiculously slow for that road, which can be taken at 35-40 with no hazard. I did some research and found out that the suburb where this occurred gets about $120,000 a year in revenue from actual traffic stops, but about $3.2 million rom the traffic cameras.

They do the same thing with stoplight cameras. Take a tenth of a second off the yellow and PROFIT!

I wonder what’s going to happen to those that say the far left lane of the highway is a speed lane for passing….i don’t think the speed cams will care what lane your in. And what ever happy to being able to confront and cross examine your accuser in a court of law, can’t cross examine a camera.

Exactly, just like they cut the yellow light timer down on red light cameras.

The only way to get 100,000 violations in 10 days to to assume that even 1 mile over the limit is a violation.

And technically it is.

“... confront and cross examine your accuser in a court of law, can’t cross examine a camera.”

this is why I never pay camera tickets (except one that I never got so I never was able to respond to)
