Sen. Eric Schmitt’s (R-MO) effort to place former special counsel Jack Smith in Atlanta amid the Fani Willis controversy hit a snag on Tuesday when Smith said the basketball game he remembered attending featured Caitlin Clark in Maryland, not a supposed NBA game in the Peach State.
The exchange during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s under-oath hearing revealed Schmitt had apparently confused the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

It appears as though Smith’s people made the error in their texts, and Eric Schmitt was just going by what information he had. They probably should have checked, though, to make sure there was a game in Atlanta on that day.
It was pretty goofy to go to all the trouble of making a poster without verifying the story, especially when Sen. Schmidt made an accusation of perjury based on the mix-up.
The worst part is giving Amy Klobuchar a chance to swoop in with her smug “correction.”
Other than Grassley, who brought up the small donor contributions, the Republicans were ill-prepared to bring any heat. He did come across as a hypocrite claiming to defend the Constitution , while diregarding separation of powers on the Rpublicam Senators’ phone records. Britt made exceceelent point about the FBI agent who prepared the case through Arctic Frost, Jack Smith picked that up and ran with it at the start of his investigation, despite Tebows rancorous, anti-Trump social media messaging that would have been enough to get any cop fired , as we have seen repeatedly. He deflected, meremy saying he “saw no evidense of bias” in findings of Arctic Frost. Britt filibustered herself by repetitively telling him to answer “yes or no, “ and then left herself short of time fo follow up questions she had. No Republican picked up her line of questioning, nobody quick enough on their feet to prosecute “fruit of a poison tree” narrative, though there was plenty opportunty to do that rather than spend all their time on Senators’ phone records.
Klobuchar spoke out of turn, discarding all Senate decorum, in her failed effort to discredit Sen. Schmitt over a minor technicality.
Come on, it wasn’t some minor technicality.
It was the entire hinge point of what was supposed the big gotcha moment. I know this because my twitter alerts started going nuts - tweets from Hannity, Benny Johnson, several others (obviously, in hindsight, timed to post) about Smith perjuring himself... Then, the laughter started (and the tweets I saw with my own eyes, since deleted).
It was an embarrassing display of incompetence.
Klobuchar was out of order, but that didn’t take away from the fact that Schmidt undermined the credibility of the case against Smith by providing what was easily the most viewed exchange in the hearing, an exchange that was based on a screwed-up reading of an email.
They’re now making memes out of Katie Britt’s look of horror as she realizes what’s happening. This exchange will be all anyone talks about, unfortunately. The whole thing feels like a set up.
Speaking of perjury, during today’s hearing, Sen. Klobuchar stated for the record that Caitlin Clark scored 30 points on 2/3/24 but the fact is that Caitlin Clark scored 38 points.
That’s a discrepancy of eight points.
Details matter and inattention provides wiggle room
Hopefully they censure Klobuchar for her conduct and lies during the hearing.
We are soooo far past that.
The moment came and went. The only takeaway from the hearing was Schmitt’s self-destruction.
It wasn’t a “self-destruction.” I thought he handled himself well both during the hearing and afterwards. He was on the Charlie Kirk Show explaining what happened, and it was clear that the Democrat’s “gotcha” moment had no effect on him.
What a train wreck that was
The poster that Sen. Kennedy held in his hand was accurate, and Sen. Schmitt's questioning was right on target and clearly left Jack Smith looking befuddled on national TV.
