A magnitude 4.3 earthquake has struck Washington’s Puget Sound region, with shaking reported in the Seattle area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and residents. People in the area described a sudden jolt.

The earthquake struck at 2:05 p.m. local time on Tuesday, with its epicenter about 3 miles west-northwest of Wauna, Washington, according to the USGS. It occurred at a depth of about 17 miles.

The Seattle area faces earthquake risks from faults beneath Puget Sound and the Cascadia subduction zone offshore, where an oceanic tectonic plate pushes beneath North America.

A 4.3 “quake” doesn’t shake, it vibrates almost unnoticeably.

It can shake. It depends on how deep it was, how close you are to the center, if are on bedrock or not, the type of structure you are in. I’ve felt a few that range that were quite noticeable.

“The Seattle area faces earthquake risks from faults beneath Puget Sound and the Cascadia subduction zone offshore, where an oceanic tectonic plate pushes beneath North America.” Just a little nudge.

I liived on the West coast for many years in LA,SF andSeattle, went through a lot of quakes. Those of us who were “natives” got very good at knowing the magnitude:
“That was a 3.8.” “That was a 4.6”

Such a useful skill...(sarcasm alert)

That’s like a transport driving by your house... I grew up next to a training base. We experienced daily shaking of a 4 magnitude from the bombs blowing up during exercises on the base... Jets flying overhead and helicopters flying by daily.

Funny fact... One of the kids I grew up with is claiming he suffers from PTSD from all the helicopter flyovers... Seriously! That is hilarious.

A 4.3 magnitude shaking isn’t worth writing about.

I worked in a very tall building just a block from the harbor in San Francisco. Got some really good shakes there. Some doors in the offices in the building were wedged shut by the shaking. As we all walked down the many steps, the big guys would help people get out.

Safely inland now, I rather miss the excitement.

I was in Seattle for the Nisqually quake of ‘01. That one was a very impressive 6.8. The effect on people who had never felt one before was nothing less than traumatic. What will happen when the Great Cascadia quake hits is difficult to imagine.

The Tacoma Fault Zone marks the south end of the Seattle Uplift, of which the similar and related Seattle Fault Zone marks the north end. This uplift is believed to be either a slab of rock about 15 km thick being pushed up a ramp, or a wedge being popped up between these two faults, by tectonic forces from the south or south-west as tectonic plates riding on top of the Juan de Fuca plate are pushed against the North American craton.
