The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public after its bomb squad responded to a call at an Ojai home last week when a concerned citizen brought home a Navy MK25 phosphorus marine marker found on the beach.
An MK25 marine marker is an aerially or manually deployed pyrotechnic device that creates both smoke and flame to mark a specific reference point on the water’s surface, according to the U.S. Army.
The citizen noticed the marker at the waterline while walking on the beach and, fearing for the safety of other beachgoers, decided to take the marker home and call law enforcement, according to a social media post from the sheriff’s department.

If you come across an item that appears to be a bomb or any other piece of military equipment... Do not take the device home.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad noted in a comment on the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department’s social media post that it has seen several of these devices wash ashore in recent weeks, possibly because of recent storms.

Both unexpended and expended markers are often found in maritime areas and washed ashore. A
number of incidents have occurred with the Mk 25 (and other markers) due to unexpended
phosphorus or a build-up of a phosphorous-type crust – this has occasionally resulted in either fire
injury/damage or low-order detonation (rupturing of the case) if the item is disturbed or re-exposed
to water. The marker also contains a small explosive charge which may cause injuries.

I has an almost football size smoke device from the navy and one July 4th I set it off in one of the beach communities, I had no idea it could do what it did, it was extraordinary, I was worried that it may trigger an investigation.

Living on the beach in California you find a lot of military and ocean related science stuff washing up on the beach, and of course the storms driving the confused and exhausted sea lions up into your yards.
That is nothing compared to one of those buoys purchased by the university I attended. Some enterprising group of students lifted it from storage and chucked it into the swimming poll. The monster was merely sleeping. It stood itself straight up, released orange dye and shark repellent, extended an antenna, and started an emergency radio beacon. A confused Coast Guard contingent based on the Ohio River came to the rescue. There were a lot of angry faces and a certain amount of yelling.
Back when, in the GOT, we used these as targets for the mini gun.
