I read this site for years and just recently started posting. The amount of name calling and vitriol I have received because I didn’t toe the line or have a hive mind has been ridiculous. You want to know why people don’t stay? Start looking at the most rabid posters who demand no one have an opinion that isn’t theirs.
Sadly, bullying is all cool these days since Covid, and ratting on neighbors for not wearing masks, excuse me, PPE.

I have seen this place vibrant, full of vigor, every night on many subjects, but not lately. You could always count on coming here and having a great discourse on many different subjects. Now it is feuds, name calling and passive comments, nothing much else.
Plenty-o-Steak still here.
Adding sizzle should be done with proven features/revisions.

Have you ever noticed that for the past 15 years during a quarterly fundraiser that someone swoops in at the last minute and settles it?
There are many foreign intelligence agencies that watch this site for the ‘pulse’. They are members and anonymous donors.

You are correct about the vitriol. That’s everywhere now. Without clamping down dramatically (which is antithetical to this board’s premise), I don’t know how to fix that. People are nasty now. Maybe a toggle to personally block certain posters? I don’t know.
Everything everywhere seems to be under attack. And quite frankly, few boards survive the loss of their founding visionary.
Well, this site does require a thick skin, nothing wrong with that, best be able to back up what you bring forth.
A Desktop on a Desk remains the only way to go.
Should it though? If someone new comes into a place and is immediately set upon is that what you really want for a place to succeed?
I’d be absolutely fine with someone with an alternate position that they supported with a coherent argument. If they took something someone said and provided a countering position. That’s not what happens here and certainly not lately. As soon as anyone doesn’t just say I agree with everything everyone has said completely they are set upon.
So what do you get? A site where no one bothers saying anything because if it isn’t amen I agree completely and without question….. but yeah. Wonder why more people don’t want to be a part of that…

Similar to my own. The content and attitudes shown in this thread is a good example of what’s “wrong” with this discussion board. It’s becoming a conservative version of the Democrat Underground.
And, it is the reason I don’t often share knowledge of it to family and friends.
I’d be embarrassed to be associated with some of the “discussions” here.
It’s great as a consolidator of diverse sources of news and information. Not unlike the old Drudge Report in the past. However, too often rational discussion devolves into purse fights.

As far as I know, this site has never been upgraded.
It becomes a bit of chore to use html when the vast majority of other websites don't. Other than this webite, what website still requires you to uses html codes? This is certainly a hurdle when attracting newer and younger people.
Also, unless you're a major corporation, most websites have a limited lifespan.

Who among us hasn't wanted to just punch someone on the chops? Too bad we can't do it on the internet. But it's a good feeling doing it on the street. If you're friends with the local po po's.
The site needs to evolve if it is to survive. It needs to update the way it functions, and it needs to reconsider the stance on ads and sponsorships. There are plenty of conservative organizations and companies that would consider advertising here. Evolve or die is the choice.
