A week ago Cliff Ellis, the caddie for erratic PGA Tour player Alejandro Tosti, stormed off the course in the middle of the opening round of the Biltmore Championship in Asheville, N.C. Now, the sordid details have emerged — courtesy of The Morning Q golf blog — in a he-said he-said feud that spilled over after several troubled months on the course together.

Tosti, 30, also had repeated outbursts on the course as the missed cuts built up. Ellis said that Tosti “went crazy” multiple times during the opening round of the Rocket Classic, when he shot a miserable 82 and was warned multiple times by PGA Tour officials. The breaking point came last week when Ellis claims he tried to calm Tosti after a poor pitch shot, only for the Argentinian to snap on him and say if he does that again he would get “really angry.”

Then on the next hole, after hitting a nice approach shot, Tosti questioned Ellis about why he had an umbrella in the bag. Ellis said there was a slight chance of rain and Tosti responded by repeatedly calling him a “dumbass.”

Sooo… Tosti got a little testy??? And the caddie is the baddie??
So, what I’m hearing is the Will Feral golf comedy series on Netflix (“The Hawk”) is a documentary.
These guys are worse than pro soccer players.

I’m siding with the caddie.
No question. I get that the player is about to lose his card, but you can’t treat your caddie like that.
Anyone that thinks this is an easy life at that level doesn’t understand how hard it is out there. I’ve watched Eric Cole work his ass off for nearly 20 years on the mini tours to finally make it out there.
Some comments were that what the caddie did by walking off mid-round was so unprofessional that he'll never get another caddie gig.
However, the vast majority said that Tosti is such a known a-hole on the Tour, that any pro needing a new caddie in the future won't hold it against him.
I’ve always wondered when caddies would finally RISE UP and make society respect them. Kind of like the Italians in NY City in the 1970s...until their mob leader got blasted just as he was speaking to the huge Columbus Day crowd protesting the association of Italians with the Mafia.
For every Eric Cole, who finally makes it to the PGA Tour after spending many years on mini tours, there are how many (hundreds?) who spent years on mini tours and never make it to the PGA Tour. They’re following their dream, but it is very expensive since often the prize money comes from the entry fees, which means most players lose money while they are also paying for their own travel expenses.
When Eric first got out there, we would talk about the tour and the process. I’d see him every day. When you’re a rookie, they withhold part of your checks, which goes back to you in the form of a stipend, which you live and travel on.
When he nearly won the Honda, I assumed he got this huge check. That’s not how it works for rookies. He already owed the tour some of that $$.
Just wow. I did not know that.
The guy obviously has the skills but he lacks mental disapline.
He allowed a few bad shots to mess with his emotions and lead to repeated missed shots.
I saw this a lot in my years bowling. A guy would have a bad frame that became a bad game because he got angry.
One bad hole does not have to become a horrible game.
He needs to get help with his mental game. That help will probably improve his inter-relationships with caddies and other players.
His arrogance will prevent him from ever admitting that he needs help.
I had the same problem except without the skills.
I’ll caddie for Tosti. No problem. That’s a golf caddie’s job.
To be berated incessantly? I’d hate to be working for you.
Tragic, to be so cursed by fate.
Naaaah. Not fate. Beer.
Not beer, beer is Good.
Too much beer is bad.
I always perform better with one or two beers at most.
One beer has a way of calming my nerves.
But too many makes me sloppy or Way too many beers gets me irritable.
