You open FoodNeverComes, pick from 22 cuisines and start scrolling. Butter chicken looks good. So does bibimbap. You add a few dishes, watch the total climb and hit checkout. A tracker says a rider is on the way.
Then you get a dummy AI-generated call from inside the site. He is outside your building, he says, but cannot find your street or door. Except there was never any food in the first place. The order exists only on the screen.
"Order the food. Skip the bill," says the site. Its slogan is blunter: "The food never comes - but the dopamine does."
Built by two 26-year-old software developers - Purvansh Parmar and Anshul Sharma - from Udaipur in India's northern state of Rajasthan, FoodNeverComes says it has attracted more than 2.7m visitors since its launch in June.
It now offers 22 kitchens, 327 dishes and 319 real recipes, complete with fake prices, a simulated checkout and a fictional delivery experience.

The founders have since taken the idea beyond food. A second site, TripNeverLeaves, lets users plan a holiday - destination, flight, seat, hotel and activities - then sends them on a virtual flight that never leaves the runway. They say it has attracted more than 100,000 visitors.
Who those visitors are is harder to establish. But Lembke says younger people may be especially vulnerable to reinforcing digital rewards because the "developing brain is a vulnerable brain".
"In childhood and early adolescence, the front lobe, which acts like the brakes on appetite, is not yet fully connected to the emotion centres of the brain. Hence, teens are more likely to take risks without appreciating the negative consequences, and more likely to get addicted to reinforcing substances and behaviours, once exposed," she says.

I really think there is something to this. My aunt absolutely loved cooking and would spend hours cooking new recipes and wonderful meals, but would barely eat. She always said that she got more satisfaction out of preparing the meal than eating it. I also have a friend who loves to bake and brings trays of cookies or other baked goods to church meetings and other events but never eats any of them. Same answer - the baking is better than the eating.

That’s funny — my mom still fondly recalls the Scholastic Book flyer. She was one of their best customers. This must have been aeons ago when people walked a mile to school? She needed help getting it home in one afternoon. “Treasure hunt!”
