A new Skid Row encampment popped up across the street from NYU dorms — with vagrants bragging that living on the streets of the Big Apple is “much better” under Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The 30-foot-long shantytown at East Ninth Street and Third Avenue sits just outside Ukrainian Village Park, with a long blue tarp covering office chairs, luggage and bicycles on the sidewalk, in plain sight of both passersby and the college students who live across the street, The Post has learned.
“Some people are nice, some people think we invade their space,” Raymond, 45, who lives in the shelter, said Monday. “I was in a Bowery shelter and they stole my stuff. I’d rather be outside.”
He said roughing it on the sidewalk is “much better” since Mamdani took office.
“The past mayor had the police and they just came through and took stuff,” Raymond said. “Now they ask if we are ok and need help.”
Unsightly homeless encampments have dotted the city over the past year, including a blocks-long shantytown near the Intrepid Museum on Manhattan’s West Side that went unchecked until The Post blew the whistle — with the city finally moving in to try to clear it out.
A filthy encampment also turned a stretch of the East Side under the FDR Drive into a trash heap, while an outdoor flophouse has overtaken the sidewalk in trendy Greenwich Village.
Mamdani’s policy for dealing with the encampments handcuffs cops, and instead sends city outreach workers to try to sweet talk and offer services to the vagrants — who often just move down the street.
After seven days, police and sanitation workers are sent in to remove the rubbish.

One can make fine distinctions between them.
"Bums" are homeless people who hang around one primary location.
A "deadbeat" is someone who does make good on his financial obligations. He may live in a penthouse apartment, but he doesn't pay his, e.g., court-ordered child support.
A "vagrant" (from the Latin vagārī ("to roam, wander)" is a "bum on the move."
A "vagabond" (same root as "vagrant") is a term with romantic connotations, referring to a traveller or perhaps even fortune-seeker who moves constantly from place to place.
A "hobo" has a strictly American etymology, and originally referred to itinerant agricultural workers or farm laborers who were "down on their luck."
A "pan-handler" is anyone who begs in public.
Please feel free to add to the list!
Maybe we should re-institutionalize the honorable profession of "beggar" - as it was in the Middle Ages! Cities used to allow begging - but only if the beggar had first been officially registered as "needy."

I wish the article had told us more about Raymond - like: What is his criminal history? How does he manage his excretory functions in a crowded city environment? Does he regularly shop-lift? Is he an addict? Etc.
But no: The article instead portrays him as some innocent street waif trying to make sense of the world and find good in people - implying that he has the moral standing to judge upstanding citizens who might be bothered by his defecating in plain sight of children.

How about gathering up Mamdani & some or all of his “adherents” & shipping them off to to another country where they could all enjoy each other’s company. Might be a PLUS for just about everybody else.

What does anybody propose to actually do with these people.
Close down their camps, get them off the street...fine.
But where do they go, what can be done with them then? Just bitching about their existence won’t help.
