For the first time since 1914, there have been no North Atlantic hurricane formations by September 21st.
Fay did not attain hurricane strength overnight, and has since weakened, with maximum sustained wind speeds dropping from 70 to 50 mph. Weakening is expected to continue over the next couple of days. No other storm formations are expected for at least the next seven days (but that can change).
The only other two times that this has happened since 1851 were in 1905 (October 8th) and 1907, respectively, and like 1914, the 1907 season featured no Atlantic hurricanes that we know of (pre-satellite era data is to be taken with a grain of salt).

Chuck, if we (our carbon footprints) are blamed when hurricanes occur then it must also be the case when they don’t occur.

This was the year I finally got a whole house generator... but still thankful we dodged the storms this season... so far.
I would agree with your observation that the difference is statistically significant. I like your observation that the ability to measure has been much refined in the latest 100 or 50 years. That is obvious and I should have thought about it.
That’s good insurance. Six years living in Georgia, we fortunately never needed it. Nor 13 years in the Poconos. We would ge outages but nothing more than 3 hours of time.
