The Albanese government is open to considering associate member status with the European Union despite threats issued by US President Donald Trump.
EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola put the idea on the table following an address by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney where he welcomed the possibility of becoming an "associate member" of the Union.
Ms Metsola said Australia and New Zealand were among the countries "with which we want to deepen our relationship".

Canada in particular has another serious issue: The earth is in the beginning years of another several solar cycle (each 11 years) little ice age period. Think Maunder Minimum times.
Canada & the northern US will have colder times, along with increasing and persistent snow & ice accumulations, markedly shorter growing seasons, food shortages and energy shortages/higher energy bills. Wind turbines & solar panels ain’t gonna cut it.
Of course, these conditions will negatively affect other areas of the world to one degree or another.
