The Albanese government is open to considering associate member status with the European Union despite threats issued by US President Donald Trump.
EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola put the idea on the table following an address by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney where he welcomed the possibility of becoming an "associate member" of the Union.
Ms Metsola said Australia and New Zealand were among the countries "with which we want to deepen our relationship".

My theory:
I don't think they were expecting Trump and on a broader perspective, MAGA to persevere, and they're not so sure they have the ability to bring the US 'back into the fold', Looks like an attempt of encirclement. (GB, Aus, Canada, NZ are four of the 5 eyes, btw).

It’s interesting who is publicly aligning against Trump, and has the most coordinated public vitriol against him - certainly Canada (Carney’s role is obvious), South Africa, now Australia and London/Brussels.
