Dengue fever and other mosquito-borne illnesses surging in Florida
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | September 16, 2026 | Cindy Krischer Goodman

Mosquito bites can be more than a nuisance this summer — they can make you sick.

Florida has become a hotbed for mosquito-borne diseases, reporting hundreds of cases of dengue fever, chikungunya fever, and even West Nile virus.

The state leads the nation in dengue cases this year with 270 reported. Increasingly, residents aren’t just acquiring the virus while traveling abroad — they are getting bitten right at home. Mosquito control experts note that peak dengue season runs from July through September.

As many as 111 people as of early September have contracted locally acquired dengue in six Florida counties this year. While eight of these cases were in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, a striking 95 occurred in Hillsborough County, where mosquito control teams are working overtime and ramping up spraying. The death of an 80-year-old South Tampa woman may be linked to a dengue infection.

Symptoms and severity

A common dengue symptom is a sudden high fever starting four to 10 days after a bite, followed by a skin rash a few days later. Treatment is limited to rest, fluids, and pain relievers.

“There is no cure or antiviral medications for dengue,” said Dr. Rana Chakraborty, division chief in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami.

Many infected individuals remain completely unaware.

“A lot of people can get bitten, acquire dengue, and nothing happens to them,” Chakraborty said. “Only a fraction have symptoms.”

For about 1 in 20 people, dengue progresses to a severe level — triggering repeated vomiting, nosebleeds, stomach pain, and organ failure — often requiring hospitalization.

And it is, that is until a hurricane blows an alligator with a python in his mouth into your newly-filled backyard swamp.

There’s a Lotta natural hazards that can kill you in this state. Most people haven’t done that research to know any better.

Florida is the lightning strike state capital of the US......there are sharks, alligators, water moccasins, rattle snakes, sinkholes, ocean rip currents, mosquitoes, hurricanes and the tornadoes that hurricanes spawn, malaria and now as we are learning, dengue fever.

All those are I’m sure a bit of a surprise to people that move here.

Mosquito Dunks!
The mosquito problem where I live was so bad last Summer that I had to put netting over my bed, choke on bug spray and be sticky from repellant. This Summer, I turned the dog’s kiddie pool into a mosquito dunk. Being out with the dogs, I only had about 3 bites all Summer early on. It was practically a miracle, and a very cheap solution, having bought the dissolvable packets on Amazon. I highly recommend making a mosquito dunk at the start of Spring. It’s inexpensive and saves a lot of misery.

Maybe they are Bill Gates skeeters infected with who knows what crap.

Or what came in with illegal invasion.

Or maybe all of the above.

California too - since 2010 we have been plagued with aggressive, invasive mosquitos - a gift from Asia:

“The primary culprits behind the increased biting are invasive Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, commonly known as ‘ankle-biters.’”

I recently saw a sign - for the first time - where I walk my dogs warning about “West Nile Fever” in the area.

Well, having lived here for seventy-seven years I'll risk the natural ones over the unnatural ones any day. BTW, I've never personally known anyone who has died from the former but quite a few from the latter.

Don’t forget we have alligators, snakes, lizards, all sorts of odd pooping birds, giant cock roaches, bears, deer that play in all roadways, Florida man, hurricanes, falling coconuts that dent your car, tourists, New Yorkers and all manner of odd transient people.
