President Donald Trump posted on Wednesday afternoon, as he was widely expected to do, fuming about the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates.
“Interest Rates in the United States should be 1%, or less, because we are the Best Credit in the World — BY FAR. Our Country is BOOMING with new Investment!” wrote Trump on Truth Social, adding:
If we stopped Trading with every country that we have a Deficit with, which is most of them, we would make, at least, 1.5 Trillion Dollars a year. The word “Deficit” is nothing more than a fancy word for LOSS. We are “carrying” almost every country in the World, and that cannot go on any longer. LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST! President DONALD J. TRUMP
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, nominated this year by Trump, refused to discuss any conversation he had with Trump about the topic during a presser after the decision was announced. The rate hike is the first increase in over three years and was expected, as inflation has ticked up as a result of the war in Iran.
“What is your message here to President Trump?” ABC News’ Elizabeth Schulze asked Warsh during the presser.
“I’ve got nothing for you on the discussion with the president,” going on to emphasize that “the least well-off [Americans] have the most to gain from stable prices. The decision we made today was the right decision to deliver on the remit that Congress gave us to ensure stable prices,” he replied.
Earlier in the month, Trump wildly threatened to stop trading with certain countries if the Fed did not lower rates.
“A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE – IT’S A BETTER CREDIT…Very simple! We should have the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World, like “the old days.” Without the United States agreeing to allow them their big surpluses, and we could stop that immediately, they would no longer be considered financially ELITE! LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT, which the U.S. Supreme Court, in its ridiculous and very costly Tariff decision, strongly acknowledged “the President” has an absolute right to do. IT’S BETTER THAN TARIFFS! The Fed Board, with its great new leader, must get smart – BE PATRIOTS for a change. High interest rates put the U.S.A. at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won’t allow that to happen!” Trump wrote on September 4th.
High interest rates not only raise borrowing costs for Americans, but also continue to balloon the U.S. national debt, which surpassed $40 trillion in August, requiring a monthly $96 billion interest payment.

Fire Warsh!
FIRE ARSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
["A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE"....Seriously?]
Treasuries would go to the moon if the Fed dropped it’s rate to below 1%
the fed only sets the overnight rate between banks. The treasuries are their own market.
So might inflation.
Yes, but you can’t believe different rates or assets don’t affect each other?
Lower interest rate, increase inflation.
Although, I suspect the inflation today is driven by systemic issues that aren’t causally related to the interest rate. Like, way too much money already in the economy. And it’s not “useful” money. It’s the equivalent of cotton candy instead of protein. All that quantitative easing Obama did has flowed down far enough in the economy to affect housing, car sales etc. And we have a perfect storm of war, high oil prices, and a number of other issues. Just lowering interest rates won’t do anything but compound the existing issues.
The Fed coulda waited 6 weeks.
The President of the United States looks at the economy through the lens of a private citizen or business, which is his background. But that is exactly the opposite of how government works. The US government need not “make” money, it literally has all the money, ie. dollars in the world. It has a monopoly on dollar production. The reason there is a trade deficit is precisely because other countries want dollars so they can trade among themselves. It was under the aegis of the dollar supremacy, ie. the era of trade deficits, that the US has achieved its unparalleled status. Destroy the system and you destroy the superpower status. Tragic that he thinks it’s all a private business that somehow must never be in debt or must make money. That’s not what the US government is for. Its debt is precisely the money that’s circulating in the economy. Where do you think the dollar in your pocket comes from? Printed by the government as debt.
Maybe the USA has too much debt?
” All that quantitative easing Obama did has flowed down far enough in the economy to affect housing, car sales etc”
And the idiotic Covid Trillions from both Trump & Biden
The Fed is independent. President can't do anything.
Trump's posts only make him look weak by drawing attention to his impotence regarding the Fed.
1% interest rates would be absolutely ridiculous. Who in their right mind would lend money at 1% when inflation is 3.4%. That would be insanity.
“Maybe the USA has too much debt?”
Oh, yeah.
I should stop “trading” with my grocery store, gas station, electric company, clothing store and doctor’s office.
I could save thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars next year. Just think about how rich I could be.
In the entire history of the Fed, there was only one time that they raised interest rates once, and then stopped. HIstory has shown that one interest rate hike always starts a cycle of rate increases.
Yes they could have.
“And the idiotic Covid Trillions from both Trump & Biden”
Oh, yeah. Forgot about that. (I’m gettin’ old.)
The issue is, each government flucks with the money supply to pump up their numbers instead of letting a short, sharp recession happen. If they let a recession happen when it would naturally occur, then they would all be short. But everyone blames the party in charge when the economy turns bad and throws them out, even if they had nothing to do with it. But Obama proved no matter how much money you throw in the economy, if your politics scare business then nothing will stop a downturn. After the GM haircut of “secured” creditors business took fifteen trillion dollars out of the economy and sat on it.
