A researcher for one of the largest and most valuable artificial intelligence companies has publicly quit — while raising the alarm that the technology “could kill us all by the end of the decade.”
Jacob Coxon, who has performed pre-training research at Anthropic and OpenAI for the last three years, posted on a wildly viral X thread that “neither company is acting responsibly.”
“They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” he wrote late Tuesday, with others from the company backing his terrifying warning.
“Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources.
“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” he wrote, saying his warning was “not a marketing stunt.”
“If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible – but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.”
Coxon further claimed that many at OpenAI have yet to fully grasp the “civilizational stakes” involved in their work. Although he said Anthropic seems to better understand the risks involved, the company is locked in a heated race with competitors, he said.
“At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first — they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk,” he alleged.
“Accepting this race and entering the “endgame” is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched from a private company’s Slack.”

could kill us all
++++++++++++++++
I have been saying this for years. More precisely, “Humanity will end itself. AI will greatly accelerate the process.”
My words.
How many lead AI researchers have quit? All saying the same thing.
Cue up Terminator 2 music.
I’ve wondered about this. It’s like building nuclear power plants without first carefully considering all the safety issues.
Oh, wait. Sorry I mentioned this. I’m told we cannot lose the AI race with China.
Full speed ahead!
No doubt a legitimate concern and warning. However the genie is out of the bottle all over the world and cannot be forced back in or ignored. AI will go on with or without good, moral people. It is imperative that our best minds stay involved and fully understand it workings and develop safeguards and defenses against malware and people who in fact want to use it to destroy us. Reminiscent of the advent of the nuclear age and how the world has dealt with it.Most understand solutions are imperative but have no idea how to design or implement them. Apparently cannot simply pull the plug. Also reminds me of HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey.
The Fermi Paradox says that we may be alone in the universe — we don’t hear or see any evidence of other civilziations. If they are out there, where are they?
There is a lot that can be said that topic.
I recently saw someone opine that a possibility is that civilizations arise, reach a certain point, and then extinguish themselves. If this discussion were to have taken place in 1980 or so, people would say “They nuked their own planet. That’s why the aliens are all dead.”
Today, we might possibly surmise that the aliens developed AI and just didn’t manage to survive that achievement.
Again.
What, exactly, is the mechanism they fear AI will use to "kill us all"?
Weaponizing robots?
Launching nuclear weapons inviting reply in kind?
Selectively shutting down the power grid?
I'm skeptical...
That article was probably written by AI, trying to lull us into a false sense of security. Elimination is really scheduled for December.
Is it wrong to think that AI could someday become something similar to Skynet in the “Terminator” movies?
AI is here. It’s not “coming.”
And yet...we are all alive. Even Mitch McConnell.
All of this drama over AI is so overblown. It’s not like the process is going to stop. It’s not going to be outlawed. And it doesn’t have to be based in the data center down the street.
In fact, if we get our panties in a bunch and try to stop it...the data centers will be built somewhere. And all of our data will stream through that. And those will probably be in China. So, there is that.
But these “Skynet is becoming aware” stories are fun.
If AI was to cease to exist in the USA, we would then be vulnerable to the rest of the world. You know China isn’t going to quit, they are just moving from biological virus to electronic ones.
Eventually, the “Data Center” will be in your computer.
Stop posting AI marketing content pretending to be news stories!
This is more a potentially fatal addiction than it is an external threat.
