'They're playing with our lives': AI researcher quits Anthropic

An artificial intelligence researcher who left OpenAI to join Anthropic has decided to leave the industry, accusing both US companies of "playing with our lives" in the race to develop AI models capable of self-improvement.

Jacob Coxon, 27, spent the past three years pretraining AI models, first at OpenAI and then, this year, at its rival Anthropic, which he considered more cautious in its approach.

Pretraining is the stage where AI models absorb vast quantities of data.

"Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives," Coxon said on Tuesday.

"The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade," he said in a post on X.

"This is not a marketing stunt," he added.

It's time to bring AI development under a Manhattan Project.

When an advanced model escapes it can do enormous damage before we figure out how to unplug it.

Even Elon Musk warns of a "Terminator" future.

Musk says there is a 10 precent chance of a terminator future.

People prefer a certain future.

We are living in a probablistic future. Right now all things are possible.

No one is talking about the risks that leadership sees— it is not (currently) “Terminator”. Anthropic specifically has created a product so good that it can easily hack into almost any protected system; not by defeating encryption, but by finding previously unknown security vulnerabilities and successfully breaching them. The fear is that in the hands of bad faith actors, this could have catastrophic financial and security consequences. Currently, LLMs are limited to being a tool; they reside on proprietary controlled servers with strong guardrails and can be shut down easily if the worst happened. When complex AI architectures are integrated onto a mobile platform (robotics), each with it’s own sensor suite, and networked, then we can talk about Terminator scenarios, but we are years away from that. At that point they can independently collect and assess their own data, share it, have full mobility and access to any system or tool. When we first demonstrated nuclear fission, many people thought the world would be destroyed in an uncontrolled chain reaction. People always fear the astronomically unlikely. I would bet we slip into an AI future with no catastrophic (e.g. tens of thousands of deaths) incidents at all, that gives us powerful tools to be more productive.

We are living in the present.

We are living in the present with a probablistisc future.

It has always been that way. But more so today since right now.

“Jacob Coxon, 27” = This is almost a teenager!

“This is not a marketing stunt,” = Yes it is. All of these “news” articles are paid to publish the same rewritten story over and over again.

Which articles? ALL articles?

Can you substantiate that assertion?
