A new law requiring hairdressers in New York to learn how to do all hair types including Black hair is now in effect.
Starting Tuesday, anyone studying cosmetology in the state must be trained to work with diverse types of hair textures.
The number of hours needed to get a license won't change.
Instruction on how to do curly, wavy, coily and kinky hair must be integrated into the curriculum.
The goal of the law is to stop anyone from being turned away from a salon.

What is “black hair”?
Just like saying every restaurant must make every kind of food………NY just sucks

Option B.......just go to a salon that specializes in the hair style you want.
Be prepared for the rant to last for hours ...
Out of control government is out of control.
Afro. It breaks easy.
What’s the big deal? Just learn to pin on hair extensions and blonde wigs.
Next, they will tell plumbers....
The goal is to keep people from opening a salon.
This is crazy. Black hair seems a specialty, and the ladies who have been specializing in it are going to be pissed.
I watch videos of hairdressers doing braids on black hair. It really is an art, and takes HOURS.
This doesn’t make sense that hairdressers would be forced into working with hair that really needs specialized care. Even washing it wrong can mess it up. If I were a black person, I would want someone who really knows how and WANTS to do the long, tedious process of styling/maintaining my hair, and not someone who is being forced to learn the bare minimum about how to do it (the article says overall training time to get licensed won’t be affected). I guess the stylist could charge extra for the skill and time spent, but then that would probably be illegal, too. SMH
This stinks of virtue signaling by city hall.
That is easy. Just start selling hair hats (wigs) in the salon.
LOL. That capital ‘B’ would certainly be useful here...
Okay, so the next thing they are going to require is for all any surgeon be able to perform all .. ALL .. types of surgery, including dental surgeries. No specialization allowed!
Especially if she’s the prototypical angry shaved head look black woman.
Might as well order all white-owned restaurants to learn how to cook, and offer soul food on their menus, in order to get a license.
I let a Korean shop cut my (male) hair one time, and sure enough, it looked like that common Korean cut.
I made a similar remark before seeing your comment about restaurants. NY State sucks because the RATS have a more than 2-1 majority in both houses of the State Legislature. That's why ridiculous laws like this get passed.
This new requirement is for a cosmetology license. The ability to cut and style different types of hair - including "black hair" -- has been a requirement for a NY barbers license for many years. The requirement runs both directions in that black barbers must also be able to cut "white hair."
