Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said he is willing to consider raising the SSI payroll tax rate and increase the amount of income subject to the tax. The tax applies to the first $184,500 of a worker's earnings.

Trust funds are projected to be able to pay full scheduled benefits until the third quarter of 2034, when continuing income would cover 83% of scheduled benefits.

Another thing is Social Security for immigrants should be not use the top benefit rate nor have a minimum benefit.

A 55-year-old immigrant can come to the USA, do an hour’s worth of work a day (or be paid by a son’s or brother’s business as if that was so [and reduce his own income tax]) for 10 years and get Medicare and minimum benefit Social Security.

My preference would be to raise the retirement age, perhaps by one month every year.

“Now define fairness”

$1 in taxes in - $1 out in benefits, adjusted for inflation (using the CPI)

Most effective means to save the system is to disallow the millions of Illegal Aliens already collecting SSI or other SS benefits.

Deport all that can be found. For the others, change the laws allowing them to suck the system dry.

Agree. Just pay us off in a lump sum check at a discount. I’ll take 25% less now than 100% in years.

Fair??!? For more than fifty years, at the point of a gun, I’ve been required to deposit large sums of money into your program, with YOUR promise of monthly support for life, based on you taking my money and investing it. I didn’t set ANY of those rules — you did, and I was forced participate. Not my fault that you squandered my money and did not, in fact, put it to work earning a return! Now I want YOU to deliver YOUR end of the bargain. That’s only fair!

(Do you see my point? “Fairness” is all too often in the eye of the beholder.)

I’m game for that. Very fair.

Will never happen, as 50%+ of our population are takers, but works for me. Certainly better than my projected negative return on capital.

Cut foreign aid and channel the savings to social security. Also tax congress 75% on all their ill gotten gains. Could also eliminate the United nations.

“I’ll never get back what I put in.”

It’s going broke because a large percentage of recipients are getting back what they put in, and often more.

The losers on an actuarial basis might have paid in more than $200,000 in 2026 dollars (including the employer match) in funding taxation. That’s a guess. I’m not paid to give justified estimates. I write checks to FR and FR doesn’t write checks to me.

At the highest level, marginal contributions probably are lost at a rate of about 70 cents (32-9/32) on the dollar, (where the 9 is the last dollar benefit multiplier and 32 is the base benefit multiplier).

Given what money is needed to make a Ponzi Scheme work (Which is impossible!). Foreign aid (yes eliminate it!), etc. is a fraction of a smidgeon of a particle of a pinch of money needed!

If the money had been INVESTED and not squandered, that would have worked just fine. (Isn’t that how IRAs work??!?) Not the fault of we who were, and still are, forced to kick in under threat of imprisonment!
