Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said he is willing to consider raising the SSI payroll tax rate and increase the amount of income subject to the tax. The tax applies to the first $184,500 of a worker's earnings.
Trust funds are projected to be able to pay full scheduled benefits until the third quarter of 2034, when continuing income would cover 83% of scheduled benefits.

Means testing(my favorite). Anyone who has already collected all the money they put in should be cut off. Start with homeowners and those wealthy enough to outlive their money. The poor should be required to work 10-20 hours/wk to keep the checks coming in. Those that don't will be labeled as kleptomaniacs.
The bottom line is any 'solution' will be kicking the can until the next fix. Cowards.
Who kept the key to the lockbox?
you dont need to raise taxes, and you dont have to cut benefits. You simply raise the cap, problem solved.
Cutting benefits will NEVER happen, and shouldn’t happen, period. And what you paid in is irrelevant, because that money would have compounded over your lifetime.
**”Why should a middle-class nurse pay a larger share of her paycheck than a wealthy corporate lawyer?” the senators wrote in a New York Times op-ed.**
Same old crap this time it’s Sen Moreno. in the sack with Pocahontas. That lawyers income belongs in the market, not the government. It inferrs there are as many corporate lawyers out there as there are nurses.
**The approaching shortfall has prompted lawmakers to consider creating a bipartisan commission...**
Here we go again. Passing the buck like cowards buying time.
There are 3 solutions. All will have to be taken into consideration but none of them suggest a new system is in order.
The only time we need to buy should be for the purposes of Trump accounts to put the program out of business. Who has the balls to suggest that?
throw the illegals and the fakers off ...
problem solved!
that money would have compounded over your lifetime
Congress kept the key but busted the lock box and took the money long ago.
Thank the media and the Democrats for this not currently being the situation. You can also thank some spineless Republicans, but of course, had the media reported the truth and public opinion was for it rather than against it, then that would have created different political winds.

“Those of us who urged the adoption of Bush’s reforms were right. But as Biggs explains, the opportunity to gain these benefits has passed us by. The reforms we have to adopt now to make the program solvent would be harder — and the longer we wait, the harder they will get.”
When does welfare money run out?
Yeah we never got Gore’s lockbox nor Bush’s stock market investment option, because they are all big talking used-car-salesmen.
Why am I being nice.
They’re liars and cheats.
Social Security should have been a government facilitated investment fund for those who paid into it. It has instead become just another item in the federal budget, and many things that are not ‘social security’ related are funded by the funds put into social security. Some in the government will swear up and down this isn’t true, but it it true.
If you have one bank account, and all of the earnings you have go into that bank account, how do you differentiate between that which was taken out for rent, vs. car insurance, vs. whatever else you’re paying for? On a personal level you can do this because you are overseeing your own accounts and have no motivation to lie to yourself. On the other hand, if someone else is overseeing the account (AKA government) they can easily obscure where the money is going.
1) Raise the income level to be taxed.
2) Raise the rate per individual.
3) Lower benefits.
4) Means testing.
5) Raise the age one can apply.
There you have it. Trump doesn’t help by being against benefit cuts. Cutting a millionaire’s benefits will be interpreted by the left as pushing a poor grandma over a cliff. The grifter/kleptomaniac charge is the truth.
Millionaires. I don’t care as they vote democrat but you all know higher taxes slow the economy. They should get nothing back.
#’s 3 and 4 can be combined into one.
Will any congress put it all on the table and risk being unemployed themselves?
“Why should a middle-class nurse pay a larger share of her paycheck than a wealthy corporate lawyer?”
Social Security is going broke because people are getting back more than they put in.
The FICA tax typically pretty much gets refunded in your old age.
The 1040 tax doesn’t get refunded in your old age.
So, she is trying to throw away the republican chances or doing well in the midterms by bringing this up now. What an idiot.
Will someone get a congress-critter to actually answer why we can fund Welfare so easily, but not SS?
Ah yes ... fleece the next generations even harder to keep the Ponzi scheme afloat.
We used to talk about the retirement triad. The Social Security System, for most Americans, is now the money losing leg of the triad.
But it works great for people getting camouflaged welfare benefits through the EITC, and for pols who want seniors to be relatively poor and dependent on government benefits for a very suboptimal retirement security pittance.
Just allow people who want to opt out to do so. Social Security can continue as is with whatever taxes are raised from people who want to participate, plus the (non-existent) trust fund the pols like to lie about.
Everyone under the age of 50 and brighter than a cabbage would be out within a year.
Yes! Don't raise taxes on workers to "save" SS. The big scam is that states shoved people onto Social Security for benefits, in order to avoid using state funds. Take the illegals and fakers off SS handouts, and the program will be more stable. Make the states do due diligence on getting rid of the faker scum.
STOP giving money to folks who never put a damn dime into the system.
Otherwise it is just a 14% income tax - and is used to buy votes.
Perhaps we should also go back to the original purpose of social security-provide old age retirement benefits.
I understand that other groups other than retirees can collect benefits. I hope someone here can list all the groups that can collect social security benefits. I remember in 1967, some college students were collect social security benefits after their fathers died.
