After years of insisting that names are fluid, the left suddenly discovers tradition when Trump picks the name.
In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, a forlorn Juliet implores Romeo to give up his family name, that of a family rival to hers. She asks him, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
The same could be said about large bodies of water, still wet and deep regardless of what President Donald Trump names them by executive order.
Most recently, Trump renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, after renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America last year.

These name changes will be insignificant footnotes in world history, unlike, say, the Louisiana Purchase or America’s purchase of Alaska from Russia.
Yet Democrats and others on the left are acting as if America invaded and conquered Canada.
The New York Times solemnly bemoaned, “Lake Ontario didn’t ask for this.” The Washington Post warned, “Trump’s push to rename Lake Ontario raises a troubling question.”
Such angst.
First of all, lakes don’t talk and don’t pick their names. Or their genders.
Back in 2015, when President Obama renamed Mount McKinley to Denali, all the New York Times had to say was, “Mount McKinley to be renamed Denali.”
Did Mount McKinley ask for this? The Gray Lady was mum on that question.

The media hysteria is certainly fun to watch.
There’s a jackass weatherman on a local tv station where I am that refuses to say “Gulf of America” when he’s doing the weather.
Hes supposed to be the “senior” meteorologist.....the immaturity is stupid.
I especially do not like changing the name of a real person who was honored, like Mt. McKinley. It is a historic snapshot of what people were thinking at the time of the naming, and ought not go down the memory hole as well as to not play Indian Giver with an honor that is supposed to be permanant. (Exceptions made for undoing name changes like Stalingrad and Cape Kennedy).
I attended a Catholic seminary in the town of Cromwell, Connecticut. Catholics abhor Cromwell, but it never occurred to me to lobby to change the name.
My junior high school was renamed
It went from honoring Juan Crespi , a Spanish Franciscan missionary and explorer and diarist . His notes on the coastline , rivers, topography led to the first reliable maps of California.
It was changed in honor of Betty Reid Soskin, a black park ranger until the age of 100. She was a file clerk at the union hall for black shipyard workers during WW2.
“You may know it as Myanmar, but it will always be Burma to me.” ;)
It just goes to show. There have been name changes in the past.
Persia became Iran.
Siam became Thailand.
Bombay became Mumbai.
Peking became Beijing.
Congo became Zaire and then Congo again, if I recall correctly?
St.Petersburg became Leningrad and then back to St. PETERSBURG.
I’m sure we could all think of many others.
Name changes happen.
Ever since Adam’s name (ground, soil, earth) and Eve (life), names are symbolic and have deeper meanings and messages.
Liberals are the masters of using symbols and names to great effect.
Trump is just adopting.
Yup. No one would buy “Myanmar Shave”.
Libiots use Newspeak routinely.
I saw a meme with President Trump renaming Ontario to Dontario. That one I like.
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it, I can’t say. People just liked it better that way.
They won’t even be footnotes in history. They’re pure idiotic masturbation on his part. He didn’t even actually change anything’s name. He basically just declared “Murca gonna call this differnt” and it’ll all be undone 5 minutes after he’s out of office.
He shouldn’t. That’s not the name. It’s the Gulf of Mexico.
Bingo, to the tenth power.
Same thing with Bombay.
