I was on the outside of the fourth turn and saw it happen. I thought the fireball was going to reach where I was sitting.

I was at the 500 this year....
you must’ve been enveloped in smoke...
First of many 500 I attended. I was diagonal across from the crash. All we saw was the black smoke and noticed no cars coming around the track. I was 12. I was also there for all three days of the 1973 fiasco. Stopped going in 1976, after being rained on 3 straight years. Still watch all the races though.
As I recall the smoke never reached me, but that fireball was very scary.
