Ok look. I have been a daily devotee and frequent supporter of this once-wonderful site for years. Since 1998 FR has had an open tab on all of my desktops for frequent, hourly, reads and commenting.
But. My personal visits are down to a few times a week because life changes and i don't get to my desk too often, and this site has become largely unreadable on cell phone screens.
It gives me a headache trying to read articles and comments.
I believe many others have this opinion and experience. Daily Views are way down and God bless you FReepers trying to keep Jim's Vision alive.
But really, why the Page View change some time ago, and what is needed to fix it?
Is there a reason it's now nearly impossible to read on mobile? Is it a function of my cell phone? Is there a secret to making it how it used to look?
Can this be fixed?
Sincerely, Class of '98

When I turn my phone to horizontal instead of vertical, the FR forum posts are larger and easier to read. Plus can enlarge further by expanding the view with two fingertips.
Same problem here. It’s readable if, after you click on the posted link, you turn your phone horizontally (you have to make sure that landscape mode is enabled). The complaint has been posted before, but to my knowledge there’s never been a response from FR management.
“When I turn my phone to horizontal instead of vertical...”
That’s what I do.
I read FR on my old, small-screen iPhone SE2020 that way every day for extended period, post comments, etc.
I read FR on a cheap Amazon Fire tablet. Very readable.
It’s been a mess for several months now. Grueling to read on a cell.
I turn my iphone on its side, and also use two fingers to expand the text to make it easier to read.
Full-Disclosure: I don’t do much HTML editing on the small phone because the virtual keyboard is a PITA for HTML tags. Oh well. :-)
I read FR during the week on my work laptop ... almost never on the weekends on my phone. It makes my eyes hurt (even turning my phone sideways).
If you have an android phone, click the 3 vertical dots at upper right than select zoom. Expand to about 175%. Works good. Can’t help with iPhone.
I find that some browsers work better than others. Opera seems to work better than anything else that I have tried.
Yeah. That is kind of how I handle it. This is something phones are not great at, but many of us try to do it anyway.
Cell phones suck for web browsing.
Time to get your eyes checked. I have trouble reading horizontal as well...
I noticed that it gets harder and harder to read FR as I get older. It is definitely not as clear as it was back in ‘98. It must be the site :)-
Couldn’t people who watch tv or sit in a room with a tv, connect a computer/laptop to it and occasionally flip over to the internet and freerepublic?
True dat.
I’m sure the Freepathon money will soon be put to updating the circa-2001 hosting software.
“I turn my iphone on its side, and also use two fingers to expand the text to make it easier to read.”
This is what I do with my android phone. I use the Brave browser and I can expand the text using two fingers.
