Indian professionals in the US now have to wait 179 years for Green Cards — after the Trump administration put tough limits on how it issues permanently residency.
The current green card backlog has hit 1.2 million people as federal immigration law restricted the number that can be doled out each year to 140,000 — with no more than 7% going to any one country, according to a new report by the National Foundation for American Policy.
This means immigrants from large countries — like India and China — are subject to wait times of decades or more before being granted permanent residency.
According to the data, a Chinese national applying for a green card with EB-2 status — that is, most professional workers with master’s degrees — could be waiting approximately 25 years.
For professionals from India, the estimated wait 179 years, according to the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) — a Virginia-based nonprofit that studies immigration and international trade.
Workers from the Philippines, meanwhile, have a wait of just a few months.
The longest wait times for coveted EB-1 green cards — reserved for those with “extraordinary ability” — sit around four to five years for Indian nationals and five years for applicants from China.
The NFAP argues that the long wait times makes it harder for US-based employers to hire and retain foreign-born workers, and burdens immigrant families.
“Many Americans don’t realize how challenging it can be to immigrate legally to the United States, even for the most highly skilled and innovative people in the country,” Stuart Anderson, executive director of the NFAP, told the San Francisco Chronicle.

I browsed through a list of the 500 greatest contributors to Computer Science. The British had their share of names, but there were only 3 Indian names on the list.

I’m an immigrant from the UK - came in ‘87 as a young teenager, spent my entire adult life here - USA citizen now for 26 years.
...my dad worked for a UK company that opened an office here, they needed him to be here. The first thing he did, before bringing us - bought a home.
Of course, I had no idea of what risks were being taken. That said, it only took us 2 years to get Permanent Residence status. I had no idea it had become such a different story for Indian’s today.
The total number of Indians who have published papers in computer science is estimated to be between 200,000 and 400,000 individuals. This estimate includes academic faculty, PhD scholars, postgraduate students, and corporate R&D engineers.

This is indeed a developing concern.
Like the Flatt and Scruggs song “99 Years” about the guy getting that prison sentence. “But it could have been life.”
RE: will they go back to India?
The Jehovah Witness elderly woman I once knew supervised about 5 or 6 young males who were students from India. She said all such young males were taught to be spoiled and indulged brats by their mothers, too lazy to work hard.
I happened to supervise about 4 or 5 young women from India at the library and all of them were hard working and uncomplaining.
Note: Small anecdotal universes of examples are not to be taken seriously.
When achieving high positions Indians, as a rule, hire other Indians over others no matter how better qualified those others are. That’s tribalistic and racist values America does not need.
Then there’s the recent discovery that many thousands of them may be working in the IT and medical fields after purchasing fraudulent documentation and are surely less competent than their jobs require.
But hey, most are just running the overpriced convenient stores and seedy motels that Americans are too lazy to.

Well, if they can’t make it here in time for them to work, they can at least come here to retire. They are lucky they have lifespans like those from Old Testament days.
The current life expectancy in India is 66.5 years for males and 70.1 years for females, so I don’t think many of them are going to live 179 years.
