‘The Odyssey’ Reclaims the Number One Spot at the Box Office, and It’s Closing in on Another Massive Milestone

Seven weekends deep into its theatrical run, Christopher Nolan’s mythic epic has spent the entire summer defying the usual rules of box office gravity. What started as a genuinely risky bet, a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of ancient Greek poetry, has instead become one of the defining theatrical events of the year, and it’s still finding new ways to surprise industry watchers.

That surprise continued into the Labor Day stretch, with ‘The Odyssey’ climbing back to the top of the domestic box office chart, reclaiming the number one position it had briefly ceded in the weeks prior. That sustained momentum has pushed ‘The Odyssey’ to a $565.8 million domestic cume, positioning the film to surpass ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s’ $574.9 million run and become Universal’s second-highest-grossing film ever at the North American box office, trailing only the studio’s own ‘Jurassic World.’

I think you are mistakenly comparing the Odyssey’s Domestic box office with Superman 2025’s Global box office. The global totals for both are as follows:

Superman 2025 box office: $619m global.
Odyssey box office: $1.5 Billion global, and it has not even opened in Japan yet.

The Odyssey is a clear financial success. Highest grossing R rated movie, lowest percentage drops for any movie above $100m, and it was clear to anyone who was objective that Nolan can put butts in seats (and that if he could get Oppenheimer, a long biopic movie about the scientist who helped create the atomic bomb, to almost $1b, he could do more with the Odyssey). It is also hilarious how some tried to constantly shift the goal posts on the movie: first break scene was $350m, then $600m, then $1b, one crazy YouTuber even said $1.3b before retracting it. People really wanted it to fail, but it did not. Some still claim that the studio bought seats …yeah, right. We are all entitled to our own opinion, but not to our own facts.

Anyways, I know there are many who wanted it to fail, including some very vocal YouTubers, and I understand why. But the issue with echo chambers is just because everyone in the group believes one way, it does not mean that everyone in the world believes the same.

I was actually telling someone that the success (sorry, massive success) of the Odyssey is why when people go to vote they need to always assume they are behind and to mobilize voting as much as possible. To avoid a situation where we are in a blind spot and don’t know. The stark contrast between negative online discourse and The Odyssey’s (massive) global gross highlights the inherent danger of digital echo chambers. Algorithms frequently amplify minority opinions until they create the illusion of a universal consensus. When a specific online community aligns strongly against a film, it is easy for its members to mistakenly assume the general public shares that exact sentiment.

As I was telling a FReeper FRiend some weeks back, this is why for politics and voting we MUST fight hard to ensure we win. Assumptions can be very dangerous. As the saying goes, ‘if you’re gonna fight, fight like you’re the third monkey on the ramp to Noah’s Ark…and brother, it’s starting to rain.’ Because not thinking that way can make people vulnerable to echo chambers, where they think everything is ok because ‘everyone I know on FR thinks the same.’

Final thing in the Odyssey …I have been on FR a long time, and I remember making the same comments 15-16 years ago when the first Avatar movie came out. Many here then said it would flop, and I tried explaining that a James Cameron movie would likely NOT flop. It ended making over $2.9 billion at the box office.
