While American blacks worship Africa, many Africans have disdain for American blacks

The disconnect between American blacks and Africa is profound, and it stunts their cultural development. A powerful strand of American black culture romanticizes Africa as an ancestral homeland, even though Africans themselves played an indispensable role in selling other Africans into slavery.

At the same time, many African immigrants look with disdain on the ghetto culture that developed in parts of black America during the second half of the 20th century.

And then there is the strangest irony of all: While some Africans reject that culture, others eagerly imitate it.

There’s a lot to unpack here.

The Atlantic slave trade would not have existed without African complicity. The traders—first overwhelmingly Arab and African, and later European—who bought slaves on the African coast generally did not travel deep into the continent to capture them. African rulers, armies, raiders, and traders supplied the men, women, and children sold into slavery.

(snip)

since the 1960s, a powerful strain of black activist culture in America has encouraged blacks to identify emotionally with Africa rather than with America, often imagining the continent as a repository of lost dignity and racial authenticity.

The striking thing is that many Africans do not return the compliment.

African immigrants have long looked critically at elements of American black culture. According to a recent study, written in almost impenetrable academese, many African immigrant families place enormous importance on education, family formation, work, and upward mobility. They often see America as a land of opportunity rather than oppression and deliberately distance themselves from what they see as destructive American black attitudes and behaviors.

That makes the current viral popularity of African videos mocking American ghetto culture especially interesting.

Virtually all of the crap that American blacks celebrate about Africa is entirely of their own invention. For starters, they suffer under the delusion that Africa is a homogeneous, monolithic, all-black place, none of which is true.

Let us not forget that the Honorable (cough, cough) Elijah Muhammad taught that black Africans built the pyramids. And until White devils stole their power, black Africans could fly (whether they had to flap their arms or simply levitated was never specified). Yet this is canon of the Nation of Islam.

Blacks aren’t even the “first” people. Archaeology and the Genome Project both agree that that distinction goes to the San people (or “Bushmen,” as featured in the movie, “The Gods Must Be Crazy”), who are brown, not black. The black Africans are the descendants of the brown ones.

One of the saddest things I’ve ever seen was Americans in Africa greeting black Africans with a “Soul Brother” handshake. There are several handshakes unique to African cultures but that one is not among them. It is entirely an American invention, but so many White Westerners have used it when greeting Sub-Saharan Africans that in many cases the Africans have come to expect it.

I have nothing other than superlatives and respectful words for the first generation Africans I have had the pleasure of working with. Nigerian, Ugandan, Ghanan etc. They “get” America and are ecstatic to be here.
I even had the distinct pleasure of meeting 3 of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” who were invited to my church to share their stories (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Boys_of_Sudan).
I have to say I’m somewhat ignorant as I’ve never worked with any ghetto type blacks in my high tech career. They simply don’t exist. And that’s sad.

I remember back in the early 2000's there was an influx of African migrants to Houston. My brother told me that they didn't like the local African-American population in Houston.

I wasn't sure what to make of this, but a year or so later my wife and I were visiting Houston and stopped in at a Walmart because the wife wanted to buy something that we had forgotten to pack.
Our cashier was a female African migrant. She was quiet, and had a very calm and deliberate manner as she rang us up.
Suddenly she became very alert and looked suspiciously at the back of the line. I turned and saw that two African-Americans had gotten in line.
I suddenly remembered what my brother had said. It's one thing to hear something like that, but to see it is...interesting.

Another anecdote: my friend's wife worked for the state of Texas.
They had an African migrant who worked in their office, and all the ladies liked him because he was a perfect gentleman and eager to help with anything that needed to be done.
Shortly after Trump was elected, ICE came into the office and took him away.
His co-workers were all shocked. Apparently, he had been a child soldier in Africa and had a pretty high kill count.
They couldn't believe it. "He was such a nice man to work with..."

American Blacks are on average 30% White.....

Plus, Africa is still a strongly tribal area (Hutu’s v Tutsi’s in Rwanda anybody?) and American blacks are not of anybody’s tribe, but their own.

Nigeria itself purged itself in a genocidal civil war in the 70’s as Igbo Biafra was all but liquidated by the majority Hausa-Fulani military establishment from the North, allied with the Yorubas of the South.

The majority tribes treated the oil rich Igbo tribal areas as a colonial holding raking in the bucks and not kicking anything back to the Igbo’s.

None of them are fit to rule themselves....of course that applies to much of the non-Germanic-Angloshere...and even that is dicey much of the time.

People from the West (especially black people) don’t realize how deeply ingrained the tribal loyalties are in African countries. Just because people share the same melanin content and live in the same African nation, it doesn’t mean that they are particularly “unified”. Tribal lineage supersedes everything else. So-called “African-Americans” are simply American in the eyes of actual Africans. A rude awakening that many black Americans encounter when they go to the “motherland”.

The tribal loyalties are so deeply embedded into the psyche in African nations, they will never progress. Those of us in the West see Africa as a continent of “black people” and assume that they are all “united” in culture and a shared vision. People outside of Africa don’t understand the lack of cultural cohesion that is prevalent in African nations based on the various tribal lineages and loyalties. Just look at Rwanda in the mid 90’s with the massacre that took place between the Tutsis and the Hutus. When a leader comes into power in most African nations, those who share his tribal lineage will prosper (relatively speaking) while those outside of his tribe will remain stagnant or regress. There is no shared national vision or pride in most African nations despite the similar melanin content.

Interesting! Of course I knew 3 African Blacks and they had ‘Normal’ names - James, Yvon (French for John) and Adam. None of them had ‘LaQwentin’ or any other made up names.

Nigerian Americans are among the highest-achieving groups in our country. They apparently are uppity and don’t accept the constraints Massa Democrat puts on them. No wonder they have contempt for American blacks.

Those made up names started in the 1970's from ghetto culture.

American blacks were named James, John, Michael, Adam, etc. before ghetto culture took over.
