A New Mexico man allegedly gunned down his cousin during a drunken argument over green enchiladas, according to reports.
Ervin Joaquin Gutierrez, 22, was cuffed on murder charges for allegedly killing his cousin, Nathaniel Cavazos, at an Albuquerque apartment complex on Thursday evening, according to police.
Gutierrez had arrived at the apartment that afternoon to visit Cavazos, 25, and another one of their cousins, and the three bought groceries and returned to the residence to cook green enchiladas and drink alcohol, according to an affidavit obtained by NBC News.
Gutierrez was repeatedly arguing that the chile on his enchiladas was hotter than the chiles on Cavazos’s plate and challenged his relative to try some of his.
Cavazos then contended that they were all eating the same enchiladas, so there wouldn’t be a difference in the spice level, the affidavit said.
Tensions began to escalate even as the third cousin suggested they take his dog for a walk to cool off. While outside, Cavazos and Gutierrez got into a fistfight, the third cousin told investigators.
Cavazos pummeled his spice-obsessed cousin hard enough to leave him bleeding and began walking away from the fight.
Gutierrez then whipped out a handgun and said, “We’re family! We’re family! How could you do this to me?” before blasting three or four gunshots toward his cousin, striking him in the back, the witness told police.
Cops arrived around 11 p.m. and found Cavazos dead in a pool of blood on a walkway between apartment buildings, the outlet reported.
A handgun belonging to Cavazos was also found roughly ten yards from his body.

Not surprising.
Correct.
That is reminiscent of “There are two kinds of spurs...”.
Violence in ABQ? WUT!?
IKR? Hard to believe 😏
No ... they were drinking beer ... or wine ... or liquor ...
Nobody just drinks alcohol.
Priorities in life not the same for all I guess.

"On a steek!"
I love NM but no way could I live there now. When I moved there in 1963(military brat) there weren’t a million people in the entire state. Probably that many in the city and surrounding area now. Great in high school years. Census says 550,000 IN Abq.
Good enchiladas are one of the few things worth dying for!
Violence in ABQ? WUT!?
I’ll bet the Thanksgiving dinners are exciting in these households. Ay Carumba!
We had chicken enchiladas last night. Not one shot fired. 😉
Ah, yes. They come to America to improve their lives. Is being dead a improvement...is murdering someone an improvement? Deport...deport...deport.
Sounds like someone should have dumped a bunch of chlorine into that gene pool at least one generation ago.
Well, green chilis are damned good.
Spice ego is the only condition where a grown adult turns dinner into a TED Talk called: “Pain: The Flavor.”
If you need to announce your enchiladas are hotter, they’re not. That’s not confidence—that’s capsaicin insecurity.
People with spice ego don’t want food. They want an audience. “Everyone look at me suffer—this is basically CrossFit for my mouth.”
“Try mine, it’s hotter.” Bro acts like he forged that chile in Mordor and blessed it with generational trauma.
He didn’t cook enchiladas—he cooked a résumé: “Skills: management, leadership, lactose intolerance denial.”
Spice ego dudes will be like, “I don’t even feel it.” Meanwhile their face is leaking like a busted fire hydrant and they’re blinking in Morse code for “help.”
“We’re all eating the same enchiladas.” Spice ego response: “No. Mine are spiritually hotter because I’m emotionally fragile.”
Spice ego is when someone thinks heartburn is a personality trait. “What do I bring to the table?” “Acid reflux and intimidation.”
The only thing hotter than his plate is the way he overreacts to being told he’s wrong. Some people can’t handle mild salsa or mild disagreement.
“My chile’s hotter than yours” is the culinary version of revving a lifted truck at a red light. Nobody’s impressed, everyone’s annoyed, and somehow it’s still loud.
Spice ego people don’t want you to taste the food. They want you to say, “Wow, you’re so brave,” like they stormed Normandy in flip-flops.
Especially Hatch chilis.
When I saw the headline, I figured it was a disagreement over whether tomatillos should be in green chile sauce.
