When I was in Hungary, I took a tour bus of the city. A 20’ish student lady was narrating the tour. We drove buy a hospital and she said heath care was “Free”, and I said, probably louder than I should have, “Subsidized”. We then drove by a bus stop and again she said “Free” transportation and I said “Subsidized”. Finally, we drove by a university campus and again she said “Free (if you qualify)”, and I said “Subsidized (if you qualify)”. She finally asked why I was saying “Subsidized”. I ask: What percentage tax do you pay, she said 40%. I asked what is your sales tax rate (VAT)? She responded 27%, but some things like food clothing are taxes at a lower rate (18% or 5%) and outdoor concerts are free of the VAT tax. I responded that your gov’t takes 67% of your income and you think everything is free? In the US, the richest people pay a 37% tax rate and 50% of the people pay 3% or less. Her response: crickets.
