With all due respect, I think that’s more your inference than what’s implied in the article. Voters of Indian decent in Michigan have leaned slightly more towards Democrats, though that has flipped recently. Still, it’s roughly 50/50. So I thought the implication was clear that by insulting a prominent public figure of Indian descent El-Sayed might lose votes that otherwise might be reflexively cast for the Dem. I didn’t think his Egyptian background or Islam had anything to do with it. Only about 10-15% of Indians in the U.S. are Muslims.

If you can come up with a better reason for why they stuck “ whose parents are Egyptian immigrants,” in the middle of their declaration of how those rascally republicans are trying to peel off his “South Asian voters” I am all ears.
