An Atlanta woman who participated in a scheme that defrauded Amazon out of nearly $10 million was sentenced to over 16 years in federal prison on Wednesday, the Justice Department announced.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia said in a release that Brittany Hudson was sentenced to 16 years and three months in federal prison after she and her partner used a business relationship with Amazon to defraud the e-commerce giant.

Hudson was convicted in March of 30 felony offenses that involved wire fraud, money laundering, related conspiracy charges and a count related to the forgery of a federal judge’s signature.

“Hudson and her partner engineered a massive fraud scheme against Amazon, stealing nearly $10 million in just a few months,” said US Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg.

“Hudson then showed utter contempt for the law by forging a federal judge’s signature in a failed effort to defraud another company while out on bond. Today’s significant sentence, which must be served without the possibility of parole, holds her accountable for her crime spree.”

From January 2022 to June 2022, Hudson and her partner, Kayricka Wortham, defrauded Amazon using a scheme that involved bogus vendors and invoices that they created in Amazon’s vendor system, according to the DOJ announcement.

Wortham and another co-conspirator at Amazon approved the fake vendor profiles, which allowed them to submit invoices.

Hudson and Wortham then submitted over 1,000 fictitious invoices, falsely claiming the phony vendors had provided goods and services to Amazon. Wortham would approve the invoices, which led to Amazon transferring about $9.4 million to bank accounts that she, Hudson and their co-conspirators controlled.

Their job is always just a side hustle -- the fraud is always the real job.

Fake profiles …

Some folks are wondering why there aren’t any mugshots of these scammers.

DOJ typically does not release images mentioned in their press releases , which in my opinion is low tech, low budget, low info.

Moderation is the key, if you don’t want to get caught.

I would think payment systems would flag cases where payments to a vendor rise in a possibly dangerous way indicating possible embezzlement.

There might be checks made after thresholds of $1,000, $5,000, $25,000, $100,000, $500,000, $2 million, etc. are crossed, to be done by a different person each time.

There’s typically 30 days to pay, enough time to do checks.

There are eccentric rich people who pay cash for cars. Would you turn down the commission? Her son could be playing in the NFL or NBA and wanted to do something for mom.

And masters of loophole hunters.

Reminds me of a Veterans Affairs claims processor who defrauded the VA for millions. She bought a huge home, luxury cars, went on expensive vacations and wore high dollar clothing and jewelry. She was getting away with it until she bought a small submarine to use in the local river. I guess that was just too obvious.

That might have upped the sentence a bit...

The car dealer had to know something wasn’t right.

Are you gonna be the one who accuses a black person with green money trying to buy something of fraud? For all you know she could be Oprah's cousin, the main squeeze of a successful rapper, the winner of a killer lawsuit, or the sister of an NFL or NBA star.

How would THAT ever understand how to drive a high performance barely street legal car like that particular model of Lamborghini?

Like wow. I guess had her own chauffeur / driver?

To like go along with the multi-million-dollar crib’…

Two women and I think a third gaming Amazon for that length of time and getting away with it. Forging a judge’s signature as well?

Reminds me of all the highest-rated “reviews” on Amazon that are so unbelievably bogus just to get people to buy a piece of junk.

Putting into the equation that they all probably or did use fake profiles to pull this off, did THEY do this or some foreign nationality do it and they got a cut for whatever, that pretty much owns and runs every motel except a local town one like in Jasper, Arkansas that rents canoes and the owner “won’t be there tomorrow because I have to go to the doctor, so if you want a room and a canoe you need to be here by 3:00 PM today to get your key (an actual key folks not a card!)”

I’m sorry I got a bit off topic there. That was a fantastic trip and the little motel and rustic cabin room was great, the local diner breakfast, lunch and dinner was amazing and while I was enjoying the Buffalo River, a couple guys found about a four-foot-long ceremonial spear carved out of some beautiful stone on the opposite bank.

Many moons ago and still remember because of the phenomenal beauty of everything and the peace.

Back to the Amazon story, glad the authorities caught those thieves and they’ll be in the Fed Pen instead of a revolving-door slap on the wrist joint.

All the examples you gave are of someone spending other people’s money. That was my point to begin with.
