Climate crisis could be destabilising mountain areas like Nepal, experts warn

The devastating flash flood that has ripped through the border communities of Nepal and Tibet has heightened fears that the climate crisis is destabilising the geology of mountain and polar regions, threatening millions of people.

Satellite imagery suggests a glacier collapse high in the Himalayas was the primary cause of the deadly torrent of mud, water and ice that tore along the Bhotekoshi River on Wednesday. It swept away buildings and roads and left at least 360 dead and 1,400 missing.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was initially blamed for the collapse. However, it is now thought to have been caused by the huge wall of ice that crashed down on to the north slope of Langtang Lirung, a 7,000-metre (23,000ft) mountain, the impact of which registered a magnitude of 5.2.

“Additional analysis of long-period seismic waves indicates that the seismic energy was instead generated by a glacial collapse and debris flow,” the US Geological Survey said.

The ice-rock avalanche pushed boulders and other debris into the Lhende Khola River, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi River. Water levels in rivers downstream rose by between 7 and 9 metres within 30 minutes, according to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, an intergovernmental scientific institution.

Scientists are still examining the precise mechanics of the Himalayan disaster, but many observe that glaciers and permafrost around the world are being weakened by global heating, caused by the burning of gas, oil and coal.

Yes, and while we’re at it, climate change heavily influenced, albeit retroactively, the US use of the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan.

Did anyone else notice there wasn’t the obligatory annual August hand-wringing over Hiroshima & Nagasaki this year? Thankfully.

Cons never give up the con. I blame this catastrophe on the Guardian! Why? Because I feel like it. Because I have just as much proof as they do!

Pretty much that same information that came out India yesterday, only to add that they suspect the same glacier had previously damed up the Ledne river creating a large lake that the glacier broke apart when it crashed.

Reporter interviewing the Indian asked at the end if it was from global warming and the guy said yeah.

Priceless! They just can’t give it up, can they? Note to globalists: It’s OVER! Climate change is been proven to be a hoax. Get over it!

Landslides and glacial collapses have been happening for millions of years…look at subsoil and structures under any of those steep gradient mountain valleys…🤷🏼‍♂️

I don’t think these dudes and dudettes are using “crisis” the way it is traditionally defined. In the real world it means the “turning point” for better or worse in a situation.

So-called “Global Warming” is a religious tenet to these people and is a constant and increasingly dangerous bogeyman.

i notice that the “experts” are warning about “destabilized mountain areas” only AFTER a big one has occurred ...

Well, that it explains it. I knew it couldn’t be one continent crashing into another lifting up the Earth’s crust 5.5 miles high.

Look up “dry calving.” Glaciers don’t stand still but slowly flow downhill. Glacial calving is when icebergs break off of the end of glaciers. They normally break off into the sea, but when they break off into a steep valley it’s called “dry calving.” It does not happen frequently, but it is a normal, totally natural phenomenon. The “earthquake” was caused by the force of it it crashing into the valley.

I read democrat message boards all the time & climate change doesn’t produce any talk. It’s ignored and only a handful of lefties comment. Nobody cares but a small group of fanatics that think all of humanity is going to die in an eco Armageddon future. They think this way because of the propaganda they choose to consume.

People with reasonable intelligence will look the history of the human world and reject their nonsense.

I wonder how these idiots will deal with what happened in Glacier Bay in Alaska. That huge glacier completely melted by 1890 from when it was first discovered in 1750.

If it is so-called “climate change” allegedly being caused by human activity, then it seems to be up to China to curtail their activities since this occurred in their backyard.

When one reads a Guardian article two thoughts come to mind. First the article content itself is full commie.

Second, read at the very bottom titled “At this dangerous time”, this is where they reveal they have TDS.

On vacation earlier this month we ran into some Brits touring the US. I asked them about the illegal immigrant invasion of the UK and high crime because of it, they said it doesn’t exist. They said it’s all American propaganda and cited their community in London is just fine as their reason for knowing all is OK.
