Richmond Public Schools has shut down Barack Obama Elementary School indefinitely after inspectors and district officials confirmed mold has spread throughout the building, just as the school year was set to begin. Rodents reportedly have shown up, too.
Richmond Public Schools chief operations officer Patrick Herrel told everyone in the building to leave Monday, and the district announced the closure that same day. Parents and staff who had been inside described mold creeping across the school, including on laptops that had been sitting in storage all summer.(snip)
Richmond Public Schools scheduled a town hall on the closure for 5:30 p.m. Monday at Frances W. McClenney Elementary. Parents, meanwhile, were scrambling to find last-minute child care, since Tuesday was supposed to be the first day of class. Kamras said the district is working to use Clark Springs Elementary School as a temporary space for displaced students.(snip)
But this closure didn't come out of nowhere. It followed a series of mold tests over the prior week, and apparently the school had experienced mold issues a couple of years earlier.
A school named after Barack Obama shutting down indefinitely because of mold is kind of a perfect metaphor for his presidency. The students there have been let down, and they’re the real victims here.(snip)
This is a community that clearly values civil rights leaders who left a real, lasting mark on African-Americans. Yet, it chose the one name on the list whose impact is mostly symbolic and whose actual record did more harm than good. Perhaps Barack Obama himself could donate some money to the school to help turn it around.
I'm not holding my breath.

Sounds like the inspectors have a deal with the unions who will now get paid for zero work.
Believe the school is in Richmond Virgina.
Yes very apt. In the same way I think his ugly library is also perfectly symbolic.
Racist mold.
Racist rodents.
Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one.
🙂
When the mess is cleaned up the name of the school should be changed in order to prevent a return of the pests.
The school was not properly maintained, period. Was that school and perhaps some others singled out for being allowed to become unusable? It was not an accidental oversight. School personnel must have been pleading for help years before the closure.

I don’t know about Richmond. But many schools in my neck of the woods have “site-based management”. Meaning, the district gives each school a large pot of money annually. The principal has great discretion on how that money is spent.
The money goes to paying staff salaries, running sports programs, etc.
So could be that this principal decided to cut back on maintenance in favor of something else. Penny wise, pound foolish as the saying goes.
School was named after a pest. What’s the problem?
That is perfect.
Well - you can't expect a property to be properly maintained when the budget money has all been scammed by the bureaucrats in charge, can you?
Public housing goes to hell after a very brief time. As do the schools. No shocker there.
I’m sure liebarry is too
I am stunned and dismayed that anybody, and I mean anybody, still has anything good to say about that stupid, lazy scumbag.
Agreed.
I’m with you on this one.
True.
Exactly.
