Five years ago today, a suicide bomber killed 13 Marines and 170 civilians in an attack on Kabul airport that came to symbolize the chaotic and ill-conceived withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
But the Abbey Gate bombing was only one part of the heavily flawed August 2021 evacuation. Afghan forces turned their weapons on civilians during the chaos, and local allies who had worked with US forces for decades were left to be slaughtered by the Taliban, according to “The Path to Zero,” a hard-hitting Wall Street Journal documentary out today.
The feature is bookended by choppy bodycam footage from the terrorist attack — carried out by ISIS-K member Abdul Rahman al-Logari — showing heavily armed US soldiers, many in a state of shock, lying amid rubble at the airport.
The film condemns the Biden administration for its disastrous end to America’s “forever war” in Afghanistan, then two decades long, pointing out that al-Logari was released from one of the two prisons the Taliban emptied after US troops started to leave the country in disarray in the summer of 2021.
“He [Biden] wanted to say to the American public that he was the president who got us out of Afghanistan, who ended the forever war,” says Paul Gigot, the longtime editor of the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page in the movie.
“[George W.] Bush couldn’t do it. Obama couldn’t do it. Trump couldn’t do it. Biden did it and everybody took their cues from that.”
The documentary, by filmmakers Michael and Thomas Pack of Palladium Pictures, features interviews with the retired Marines, diplomats and others who were eyewitnesses to the hasty pullout and its serious collateral damage — much of which went unnoticed by the wider world, which was focused on the COVID pandemic at the time.

Who is ultimately responsible for the tragedy of Vietnam?
I’d say LBJ. Not Nixon. Not Ford.
Same goes with Afghanistan.
Biden certainly botched the withdrawal.
But George W. Bush is ultimately responsible.
Having served during Vietnam, the whole war effort changed, including the morale of the troops after the Tet Offensive in 1968. The Rules of Engagement changed, and that proved to the North Vietnamese that Johnson and the American People no longer had the will to finish the war. I hold Johnson partially responsible, but the main blame was the Media in that day, which is the forerunner of the lying weasels we have today. It is not a coincidence that the Iranian Revolution leaders which became the IRGC use the Tet Model to hold the US at bay for 47 years.

I won’t disagree. I’m not an expert on the topic. But at some point the mainstream media flipped in this country. They went from being neutral reporters to being hacks pushing their own point of view.
I searched the Net for anti FDR editorial cartoons. They were not easy to find , most of them were propaganda for FDR. Not far enough back for you? President Jefferson said the truth itself becomes suspect when carried in the polluted vehicle of a newspaper.

I am glad that it is remembered as Biden’s screw-up, but it did not have to happen, at all.

I see your point. But there were even cartoons mocking Washington when he was president. So, yeah. We always had that sort of thing.
But at least at one time things were more balanced. You had Republican newspapers and you had Democrat newspapers. I don’t see that balance now.
And now the good news: The internet is of some value in restoring that balance.
I worked in 1st Div G2 Intel at Lai Khe during Tet. We knew of troop buildup and let it happen. Westmoreland knew it quite well as he visited us and was briefed by G2 on it.
I made the point here , over and over again, that the war in Afghanistan was doomed to failure because we were supporting a government with an explicitly Islamic Constitution. We should have made it clear that they had to follow the example of Ataturk in Turkey who separated Mosque and state. Zero support for any government that tried otherwise .
We should have kept Bagram like a middle-east Guantanamo Bay.
Biden’s pullout was a horror and a disaster. But the policy of multiple administrations starting with Bush to just let troops linger in Afghanistan was a disaster too. At a certain point, it became clear that Afghanistan was not going to turn into a democracy or Western ally. Or even a stable country. So what was the point of keeping troops in the country other than giving the Taliban a rallying point and target practice?
It was doomed because 'nation building' is a central planning pipe dream, and always will be.
I voted for Bush in 2000 because he said (of the Somalia debacle), "It started off as a humanitarian mission then changed into a nation-building mission and that's where the mission went wrong. The mission was changed. And as a result, our nation paid a price, and so I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation building. I think our troops ought to be used to fight and win war.
And during the October 3, 2000 debate, "The vice president and I have a disagreement about the use of troops. He believes in nation building."
I lost a brother of a brother and other brothers at the Rockpile during Operation Lancaster II. My stepbrother was a Tank Commander with ROE of no firing unless fired on. So they stayed on the ridges and got the crap pounded out of them. We lost our will to win then, and the politicians are responsible (both Democrat and Republican).
On the top 10 list of worst Presidents Biden fills the top 5 slots, with Obummer at 6, 7 and 8, LBJ at 9 and Jimmy Carter at 10.
LBJ, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barak Obama and Joe Biden.
It really is hard to say which one is the worst because they were all so consequentially destructive in their own unique way and they all contributed to legacies that have destroyed our country.
If forced to choose I'd go with Barak Obama in his first two terms and his third with Joe Biden.
