'This is wrong and this is racist': Reactions lead to Target pulling Halloween costume and apologizing

Target has removed a children's Halloween costume after it was widely criticized online over the weekend for evoking racist minstrel imagery.

Target has since pulled the costume and told KARE 11, "As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale."

The costume was labeled as "Kids' Glows under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume Bodysuit - Hyde and EEK! Boutique."

Since when have minstrels become taboo? I always enjoyed minstrels. Al Jolson did a great job in the first "talkie" The Jazz singer. Micky Rooney, Fred Astaire, all the greats paid homage to our minstrel heritage. It's the usual suspects who want to tear down America who get upset over a Halloween costume.

The other day I was working on a crossword puzzle: the clue was “Medieval musician,” and the answer was “minstrel.” Minstrels do go way back, and they often wore some sort of costume, as do singers and musicians today. I wonder if there would have been a controversy if a white kid was shown wearing the costume.

Other than that, blacks and other minorities are way over-represented in advertising. You never see a white family, always mixed race or “ethinic.”
