Trade talks with Canada collapsed late Friday night, setting in motion steep 50% tariffs on a wide swath of Canadian goods. The duties went into effect at the stroke of midnight.
This particular time, PM Mark Carney was the one to cancel further negotiations and say, Canada would match US Tariffs dollar for dollar.
Carney and the Liberals have used Anti-Trump rhetoric as a political tool to advance their agenda, basically the more they fight Trump the more popular they become in Canada for a significant percentage of the population. If you have been watching Canadian Media in the last couple of days, the consensus was Canada folded, gave in to Trump and got very little in return, which I think is the reason why Carney has ended the talks, he sensed the polls were turning against the Liberals and needed to show strength against Trump considering he ran on getting a better from Trump than anyone else could.
Additionally, with the midterms approaching Carney believe the Republicans are going to lose which will put pressure on Trump to make a deal more favorable for Canada.
This is the ultimate FAFO moment for Canada, I think it's obvious that any type of trade war by Canada with the US will end in Canada's economy getting crushed, it's foolish by anyone in Canada to think fighting an economy that is 10 times your size and is solely responsible for your economic wellbeing is a good move.

TDS up here in Canada is off the charts and it is being used to the max.
TDS is like a mind virus. It shuts people down from thinking and looking at anything with logic and reason. It grips people in a purely emotional state, even if it’s irrational.
The libs, which includes the media, are pumping out the orange man bad narrative like there’s no tomorrow. I suspect we’re going to find out very quickly that it’s not very bright to pick a fight with your super power neighbor with whom you share a 4,000 mile border and are completely dependent on.
Canada has a large population of very brainwashed people.
The US takes 75% of Canada’s exports. That is however only a relatively small percentage for the US.
The US economy is $32.5 trillion. Canada’s is $2.5 trillion.....ie 1/13th the size.

It’s amazing what politics and propaganda do to people; Canada has the good fortune to share a huge border with an economic superpower that literally could buy Canada with pocket change.
Canada is sitting on natural resources that the USA would find very useful, resources that can be found in other places in Countries who would more than happy to get into the US market, while Canada sits around and pokes the US in the eye with a sharp stick, all the while the media in Canada pumps out Orange Man bad propaganda nonstop.
Instead of making a deal with the US and making your country prosperous, they choose to huff and puff to enhance political power while their country circles the drain, it’s insane.
It would be hilarious if Mexico and the US announce a deal next week while Canada is hit with 50% tariffs.
Let’s just take over Canada, free their people, and be done with it. Otherwise we’re a bunch of hypocrites.

Refined petroleum-$15.5 billion
Motor vehicles parts and accessories-$11.4 billion
Other imports from Canada include electricity, raw aluminum, sawn wood, and baked goods.
And maple syrup...
Of course, it was intentional, Trump has been POTUS for about 6 years, if you haven’t figured out his negotiating style by now you are either ignorant or stupid.
Rightly or wrongly, Trump’s style is meant to disorient the other party, get them off their game and try to gain leverage to force them into a deal.
Trump is also not afraid to use the economic power of the US economy to force things on other countries that can’t stand up to the weight of the US and who otherwise would not make the concessions he’s demanding.
IMO, Carney is playing a dangerous game of economic chicken, hoping the US Midterms will force Trump to back down, while being supported by the media in Canada who will go into overtime blaming the big bad bully to the South and how their heroic PM is standing up to him.
I think this is foolish because their economy will get crushed in the meantime, it will be interesting to see how this turns out.
It is unfortunately probably more accurate now to say that the US will end up with reciprocal tariffs on Canadian goods, and they all (both directions) will be high.

It’s very unfortunate this has happened, for some reason Carney can’t or won’t accept he asymmetrical differences between the two countries.
Whatever trade we lose from Canada can likely be made up from other countries who would love to break into the largest economy in the world, while Canada has nowhere to go to offset the loss of the largest economy in the world.
I was trying to explain it to someone the other day like this.
Suppose you were a small company who has their product in Walmart the largest retailer in the world, you are making a fortune from this arrangement, Walmart comes along and says your product is too expensive, we need you to lower the cost, instead of trying to work it out with Walmart, instead you pick a fight with Walmart and lose the access for your product.
Your company now is getting crushed, while Walmart finds a similar product from another company for less money.
Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan? Perhaps Yukon and the non greater Vancouver parts of British Columbia? Yes. The rest of Canada? No thanks. We don't want those voters.
In fact, I'd be more than happy to trade everything from Occupied Northern Virginia through Maryland, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Philly and NYC for everything west of Ontario except Vancouver.
Both countries would be so much happier.

Carney isn’t calling the shots.
The tariffs only apply to 20 Billion in goods in retaliation for Canadian tariffs that apply to US imports but not EU imports.
Canknuckleheads will alter their shopping habits.
They will no longer purchase made in the USA products at Walmart, COSTCO, Starbucks, Shell,...
