New hypoallergenic peanuts could bring the salty snacks back to airplanes and school cafeterias

Navigating a world with peanut allergies can be… well, nuts. Even if you’re not the one who’s allergic.

More than six million Americans have a food allergy, and peanuts are the third-most common allergen. And it doesn’t just impact those who can’t eat it: Because reactions can be deadly, peanut-free policies and other restrictions are common in places like schools and restaurants.

But a Minnesota-based startup is developing a new “hypoallergenic” peanut that could bring the salty snack back to hospitals, planes, cafeterias and restaurants without causing allergic reactions. Nurtured Nuts CEO Bryant Williams sought to remove three of the clinically relevant proteins found in peanuts — RH2, RH6, and RH7 — that can cause a severe allergic reaction by modifying peanut DNA using CRISPR.

Frankenpeanuts? No thanks. But I’m curious -— why are there so many people with peanut allergies now? I’m 74 years old, and when I was growing up, this just wasn’t a thing, but by the time my children were school aged, it was rampant. Why?

I don’t remember a single kid with a peanut allergy in the 80’s.

Kids dying from peanuts is like the cell phone, it didn’t
exist, and then suddenly it hit the news and within no time it was everywhere and it changed life in America.

You just hear about them more now because death incidence is overall lower, and so there’s a higher relative severity than in earlier periods. Incidence is actually decreasing marginally, and is like 2% of the population.

So, at this point, it’s more just a matter of exposure to clickbait/outragebait/etc news sources which might choose to overreport shocking stories to drive business.

OK, if you look at the allergic and non-allergic, can you tell them apart?

It’s this sort of chemical and genetic engineering which has caused so many allergies in the first place

Cool. I just hope they can breed the flavor out of them like they did in creating seedless watermelons

Allergies are real and can affect anyone at any time. I am not allergic to peanuts nor is my wife. Our daughter however, was allergic for many years then somehow just grew out of her allergy and now can eat peanuts. I am allergic to yellow jacket, wasp and hornet stings but not honey bees. They are not related. I’ve been in the hospital several times, throat closing, close to anaphylactic shock. I had shots for almost 5 years to desensitizing my system. It worked for almost 20 years, then I was stung on my arm and it blew up twice the size. Prior to that I had been stung and had no severe reaction. So, the shots worked for 20 years and then the allergy came back. I’m not going through the shots again, very painful.

My first thought was “made in China?”
But the article says “a Minnesota-based startup is developing” so my second thought is “made in China?”

With the new peanuts they’ll have to find another way to get attention. They can go to the gluten cult.

Like you, nobody had a peanut allergy when I was in school in the ‘50s and ‘60s.

I’m 71. Told my wife my theory was prior to the 80’s, no one realized the allergy, and people just died “unexpectedly” and the trend stayed low
