Senator Darline Graham’s (R-SC) shocking debate fail has gone viral — with observers on both sides roasting the senator’s stunning lack of command on key issues.
The defining moment in Graham’s debate with Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) came when co-moderator Greta Van Susteren asked: “Are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States? And if so, why or how?”
“I’m just gonna be honest here,” Graham replied. “I’m not, on national security- I’m not that informed on national security, so- but I do support the military. My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years, so I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the Army. I’m not a polished politician up here. National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I support the military.”
Graham — the sister of the late Lindsey Graham, who was appointed to finish his term by President Donald Trump — made other gaffes during the evening. She estimated the population of South Carolina to be “50 million” — miles off the actual total of roughly 5.5 million.
But her non-answer on Taiwan dominated the talk after the debate.
“Lindsey Graham was well informed on the United States’ national security,” said former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who is supporting Norman. “Darline Graham admits she’s not. This is not something you inherit. And it’s critical in the U.S. Senate.”
“I’m sorry, but respectfully, even accounting for her being new to the job, this is embarrassing and inexcusable,” added Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation. “China’s threat toward Taiwan is a bit of a big deal, especially — it would seem — for a member of the U.S. Senate.”

OK, I’m asking.
Too many people have the notion that being related by marriage or blood to an elected official automatically qualifies a person for the same office. Those who supported Darline Graham should have done some vetting before automatically supporting a nepo lady.
Whoa! That statement is gonna rile some with acute Type 2 TDS. She’s been endorsed by their deity and that is sacrilege.
Too bad Floridians didn’t get a debate with all the gubernatorial candidates present.
I disliked Lindsey Graham because I disagreed with many of his policies and positions, but he never struck me as being stupid or incompetent, just someone I disagreed with. His sister strikes me as completely incompetent. That’s bound to happen when people vote for or appoint a candidate whose only “qualification” is being related to the previous office holder.
Sadly, some of them are particularly evil and ambitious, and are good at using the strange twists of law, and the rules of the Senate to stymie the wishes of an elected President, thus the will of the people.
If Senators would do what's best for the citizens of their state and for the country, we would be in great shape as a country. As it is, we have the most dysfunctional legislature in the history of our nation. And it's all because the political parties choose the candidates before the people get a chance to vote for them. Then their campaigns are financed by the party. So, of course, the elected official puts the party before the people.
I fail to see much daylight between crazypants DSA ideas like “ABOLISH THE SENATE” and the implication that it should just be a rubber stamp rather than a deliberative chamber in a coequal branch of our Republic.
You seem to be fond of the "real estate agents" canard. Are you referring to Jared Kushner who was instrumental in bringing about The Abraham Accords?
I have a hard time understanding after the first Trump administration in which he was stymied, backstabbed and under constant unlawful litigation and the 4 following years of unrestrained destruction of America, that anyone would not be totally supportive of a president trying to do the best for us.
There are a lot of you on this site that are unhappy with every thing Trump does. Keep it up and maybe you'll convince enough to sit out the mid terms.

The only person who chose this particular candidate was President Trump. Having an incompetent in high office is no formula for good government. The fact that she’s self-professedly ignorant of important issues makes her more malleable to influence of entrenched powers.
Luke most senators, on a good day she can spell her own name correctly.

Well, Darline Graham just did it in the South Carolina Republican Senate debate.**
Aside from the fact that Gerald Ford was undoubtly a better athlete than the not quite funny enough for anytime Chase, (and smarter as well), he served in the Navy during WW2, and had entered politics as a US Rep. Certainly lower on the totem pole than any senator.
Why be proficient on any issues outside of their state?
I wouldn’t call that disastrous. She was honest about her shortcomings. I’m sure she’ll come up to speed.
My comment only reflects the deterioration of our ideals. In theory, we would have great leadership. In practice, we are in deep trouble.
