The adherents of Islam who live in Dearborn, Michigan have limits in terms of what they can enact under the law. Explain those limits.

Muslim residents of Dearborn, Michigan—like all other U.S. residents—are subject to the U.S. Constitution, federal statutes, the Michigan Constitution, state law, and Dearborn’s secular municipal ordinances.

They cannot enact or impose religious law as official government policy.

Dearborn has a large Arab-American population (roughly half the city is of Middle Eastern/North African ancestry, with a substantial Muslim share), and it has elected a Muslim mayor.

That demographic and political reality does not change the legal hierarchy. The city operates under the same framework as every other Michigan municipality.

The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. The Establishment Clause bars government from establishing or officially favoring any religion, including Islam.

The Free Exercise Clause protects private religious practice but does not authorize religious rules to override generally applicable criminal or civil law.

Michigan’s Constitution similarly guarantees freedom of worship while prohibiting compelled support for any religion and stating that civil and political rights cannot be diminished or enlarged on account of religious belief.

Federal and Michigan civil-rights laws (including the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act) prohibit religious discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and government services.

Courts will not enforce private religious agreements that violate public policy, equal-protection principles, or statutory rights.

What cannot be enacted or enforced:

1.) Official Sharia or any parallel religious legal system. There are no Sharia courts with governmental authority in Dearborn or Michigan. Informal religious arbitration among consenting adults (similar to other faith-based mediation) is possible for personal matters, but U.S. courts will not give it legal force if it conflicts with U.S. law.

2.) Criminal punishments drawn from Islamic jurisprudence (hudud penalties, apostasy rules, etc.). These are felonies under U.S. and Michigan criminal codes.

3.)Polygamy, coerced marriage, or underage marriage that violates state age-of-consent and consent requirements.

4.) Official gender or religious inequality in law (inheritance rules, testimony rules, or public-office restrictions based on faith).

5.)Blasphemy restrictions or viewpoint-based speech limits. Criticism of Islam, including protests and even Quran burnings, has occurred in Dearborn and is protected speech unless it crosses into true threats or incitement. City officials have stated they will enforce conduct-based rules (assault, blocking streets, property damage), not content.

6.) City-wide religious mandates (dress codes, food prohibitions, prayer requirements, or privileging one faith’s practices over others). Liquor stores, pork products, Christmas decorations, and churches exist alongside mosques. Noise ordinances apply to mosque loudspeakers for the call to prayer the same way they apply to other sources; recent complaints have been handled under those secular rules.

Dearborn’s city council and mayor cannot pass ordinances that conflict with higher law. Zoning, noise, public-safety, and land-use rules must be content-neutral and applied evenhandedly (Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act adds extra protections for houses of worship of any faith). Schools, police, and courts remain secular institutions.

Private religious observance—prayer, diet, dress, holidays, mosque attendance—is fully protected. What is not protected is using government power to impose those practices on others or to displace the Constitution.

Claims that Dearborn is “under Sharia” have been repeatedly fact-checked as false.

The title is, Is this Islamaphobia, and no it isn't. It's the reality, aand it is not much better for those who reject Islam.

Kick them all out. They have a lot of countries in which they can express their religious beliefs.

The author of this article doesn’t know islam at all. Muslims cannot assimilate because of the koran. The koran directs the killing of Infidels, that’s you, white boy!

The same accusation could be made of Christians, whose sacred texts in places espouse genocide. We don’t do that here. We take things from the text in context.

If you truly understood what was going on back in the Old Testament, you would know that it wasn’t genocide.
