Columbia House, the subscription-based mail-order music club, has quietly announced it is shutting down.
”After 9/15/26, The Columbia House will no longer be accepting new orders,” noted a message on the company’s website. “You can still purchase books with your credit card or credits as normal.”
Columbia House was originally launched in 1955 by Columbia Records. Designed as a way to reach music lovers in rural or suburban areas that often didn’t have record stores, the Columbia House concept was simple, yet revolutionary. Customers could order records by mail and have them delivered directly to their home. Membership often came with promotional discounts, as long as the subscriber promised to purchase a minimum number of full-priced records within the first year.
The groundbreaking model proved successful, as Columbia House quickly racked up subscribers. As the brand’s popularity grew, it continued to push into new formats. Columbia House rode the wave from vinyl to cassettes and onto CDs, and somehow seemed to get bigger with each evolution.
When Did Things Go Wrong for Columbia House?
By the mid-’90s, it boasted more than 16 million members and was a significant force in the music industry, accounting for over 15% of CD sales in America. Many fans remember this era of Columbia House the best, as the company regularly offered new subscribers 10 CDs for just a penny when they signed up.
However, after successfully surviving many new changes in the music industry, Columbia House proved unable to handle the digital revolution. A failed merger with CDNow in 1999 foreshadowed future struggles. By 2001, Columbia House’s imprint in the music sales market was half of what it had been just five years prior. The rise of file sharing sites like Napster and Limewire only further added fuel to Columbia House’s demise.
After a series of ownership changes, Columbia House filed for bankruptcy in 2015. The company stopped selling music entirely, instead focusing on DVD and Blu-rays.
Though the company was often criticized for its business practices – including a reputation for making it difficult for customers to cancel their membership – it remained a nostalgic icon to generations of music lovers.

I probably still owe them money.
I had a friend of mine on the block who would sign up our neighbors and then collect the deliveries before they came home from work. He would give me dibs on some of the albums and tapes, some of which I have to this day.
There's no way I would have gotten away with this with my parents but they never noticed the random album in the rack - I think......

I have a very substantial vinyl / CD collection. The type you don’t play or brake the seal on the sealed stuff. Some hard core collectors of various bands seeked out the record club editions as they typically were pressed in smaller numbers. For the most part zero difference in the issue vs the standard record label issues other than a tiny printed “CRC” listing on the jacket or label. RCA and Capital had clubs as well.
I think my mother kept Columbia House in business for many years, lol. She never sent anything back. I have alllll her albums and collection albums now.

I have alllll of my mother’s classical music collection albums and every other genre, too. She kept everything they ever sent her.
My car stereo plays both, too. A 2004 Hyundai Sonata.

Some, depending on title can be worth good coin especially if the chipboard sleeve is still available. Sealed!, can be huge money.
Got Steely Dan’s Aja on cassette from them back in the 80s. Such memories.
Now I can right-off that Columbia House debt... Good thing too... They’ve been calling me for decades.
I’m guessing from the actual owner, and the law. They rented from the owner, and stayed in the upstairs area. They weren’t paying any of the rent from the downstairs tenants to the owners. And one of them was using her job as a “cleaning lady” to steal stuff from the houses.
But I don’t want Santana Abraxas!
And you were supposed to but like six or eight albums at regular price over the following year or two.
I wonder how many people just ordered the 10 albums and never bought another.
Crappy albums by untalented artists and file sharing helped destroy them. Probably coulda’ done better with vegetable seed packets of the month.
