President Donald Trump proclaimed on Tuesday that talks with Iran were not happening, a direct contradiction to his own son-in-law and top negotiator Jared Kushner, who said a day earlier that the negotiations were ongoing.
“There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the president posted to Truth Social on Tuesday. “The Naval Blockade remains in full force and effect. The Hormuz Strait is open and operating. All water mines have been removed or detonated. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
But Trump’s post may have been news to Kushner, the husband of first daughter Ivanka Trump, who indicated to Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst on Monday that the talks were ongoing, and that the president was waiting “for the right deal.”
“Right now, President Trump’s been focused on the economic pressure,” Kushner told Yingst. “He really feels strongly about the blockade. If you look at the Iranian economy, it’s way worse off — it was bad before the war — it’s way worse off now. But President Trump’s very, very clear on why he took the actions he took, which is he believes that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
He added: “And if Iran is willing to, you know, finish the deal they’ve been discussing with us to give up their ability to create a nuclear weapon, then obviously he is going to make a deal that could be great for the Iranian people, and it’s something he would be open to. But right now, they aren’t showing any interest in doing something that makes sense for us.”
The latest development comes as the Iran conflict approaches the six-month mark.
Kushner spoke to Yingst in Jerusalem, where he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a bid to push Trump’s 15-point plan for peace between Israel and Hamas, CNN reported.
Kushner wound up leaving Israel without a breakthrough in the talks as Israeli and Hamas leadership held firm on their own demands, according to Reuters.

“Consider the source.”
But is it true ?
IMHO one mistake Trump made is in letting others add to the criteria of defining a win against Iran. Initially it was to harm Iran militarily and financially and make it nearly impossible to build nukes for a while. Then he let the naysayers add to that the strait has to have traffic flowing through it more freely than before (was it really open before?).
As soon as the Dims and Chicoms, but I repeat myself, started yelling, "But the Strait!", Trump should have said repeatedly that it's not America's problem. He said that once or twice, but then took on more than he can chew by claiming that he'll get the strait open (thus seeming to accept the premise that an American war aim is to open the strait and not doing so constitutes a failure).
Jared and Ivanka need to go back to Miami. It was nice when they weren’t around for the first year of this administration. I see they’ve wormed their way back in.
Yes.
And easily verified.
The President posted his on-Truth Social, and Kushner was interviewed by Trey Yingat in Fox.
There’s too much money to be made.
“Initially it was to harm Iran militarily and financially and make it nearly impossible to build nukes for a while.”
Since he claimed that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been obliterated a year ago, it would be hard to make that claim again without on-the-ground verification.
And we’re not going to get it.
If it was important, Trump would have done this same deal as 45.
100 bucks it’s all about 2020 being stolen. Seems to be all he cares about.
Are you saying this is not a ‘stupid Iran fiasco’ ?
I’m on your side here, but I would like to offer a different take.
After deposing Nicholas Maduro the Iranian people took to the streets for US support in getting rid of the Ayatollah.
We didn’t like Iran having nukes but while we knew they were building weapons we didn’t believe they were close enough to have accomplished it. Frankly, North Korea is closer.
We performed our (night I add perfectly executed) strikes to take out the regime. That should have been it and this is where our CIA leadership needs to be fired : Iran responded in a way that no one thought they would.
Bears repeating:
They attacked ally nations in response.
They lined up civilians on bridges and buildings and ensured the international press were present. (A war crime.)
Sitting down shipping through the strait was NOT military decided by either side. The insurance companies refused to insure any shipment. By default this is why shipping doesn’t happen in that region now. It has nothing to do with was. It’s financial risk.
While people are arguing over “who is shutting down the strait” President Trump has been repeating to a wall: “The strait is open!”. He is correct.
The only evil entity that has shut down the strait are the international maritime insurers. I’m willing to bet they are reporting certain ships to rogue forces in Oman and Iran so they can purposely be sunk to drive up costs.
The chances that the shipping disaster in the Gulf has anything to do with Iran or US efforts is less likely than financial incentives.
May be drink some strong coffee. None of the countries possessing nukes are suicidal. Then look at Iran. Inflation is higher than any country by orders of magnitude. Iran’s currency will need a Mack truck full to buy a loaf of bread in any other country. Oil revenues are down 86% because of blockade. Iranians are unarmed and quietly suffering unable to do anything. If they protest, they are murdered. But you think it is Okay for Iran’s leaders to possess nukes?
No. Why would I?
Mediaite is about as left wing as you can get.
Correct. Which is why it is the narrative that gets pushed throughout the midstream media and ultimately, believed by the average voter.
Maybe. Would not necessarily be out of character. I feel as though we hear quite a few things from time to time that aren't precisely true coming out of the administration. That is not a criticism of the administration, mind you. Just an observation.
And who selected them? Kushner and Witkoff are the dynamic duo of Trump 2.0's failed foreign policy, whether it's Ukraine, Gaza, or Iran their work has been an abject failure driven by Trump's fantasy of being a deal maker.
If I was President, my national defense policy would be predicated on the assumption that every nation in the world has access to nuclear weapons and has the ability to use them against the U.S. on little or no notice.
Exactly.
Full stop. Whether talking about Iran and/or Trump, here's an uncomfortable reality about building nuclear/atomic weapons. It doesn't take long for an established nation to do that with the right materials. For context, the Manhattan Project made atom bombs in just 3 years. That was making them from scratch, and with 1940s tech and know-how. That was also when the U.S. population was 130 million (not much more than Iran today with 90 million).
Given those above, someone like Iran today already having worked on building nukes can restart the program and be completed much sooner than 3 years like it took the U.S. So any talk from either Trump or Trump haters about whether or not one bombing attack did or should have been able to forever stop Iran's ability to build nukes is a bunch of hogwash. We have to always be on them, especially given their repeated threats to destroy the great satan.
both points are verifiable
see post 24
“We always have to be on them “
Do you regulate the world ?
“Consider the source.”
But is it true?
Is what true?
Trump is contradictory
Why should that be a news item?
