Shake Shack has responded to a viral video showing customers who declined to tip were charged more for their order.
The fast food chain spoke out after patron BD Powell shared a video showing the outrageous situation at one of Shake Shack's locations at a Salt Lake City airport.
The clip showed how the total cost of Powell's order jumped by $1.50 after he refused to add a tip.
The video quickly went viral after it was posted on TikTok on Saturday, clocking up more than four million views and thousands of furious comments.
Shake Shack spokesman Corey Gee has since told the Daily Mail that the incident was the result of an error within the kiosk technology at a licensee's restaurant.
'It is not Shake Shack policy, nor that of our licensees, to increase the price of menu items when no tip is added,' Gee said.
'The pricing issue shared online occurred at an airport Shack that is owned and operated by our licensee HMSHost. HMSHost investigated the matter and determined it was an error within their kiosk technology unrelated to tipping.'
The spokesman said the issue has been resolved and that Shake Shack will continue working to make sure every guest is taken care of.

Bigoted much?
I’m in NC and the Jersey Mike’s here, a sandwich shop, asks if you want to leave a tip on the screen when you pay. I say no. Pretty sure Subway asks, too, but haven’t been to one in a while since trying Jersey Mike’s.
Tipping the counter help would be like tipping a chef at a restaurant. Tips are for waiters and waitresses that serve the food at a table.
Yeah CA is about the same as UT:

Just skip Shake Shack and go to “Steak ‘n Shake”! Grass fed/grass finished beef and fries done in beef tallow! (Like McD’s did long ago when their fries were better before the switch to Rapeseed/Canola oil).
Good question.
Exactly!
Unbelievable.
who tips at a kiosk? who asks for tips at a kiosk? I have tip fatigue... I just hit zero and don’t care anymore.
“I only saw this request for a tip at a fast food restaurant ...”
I’m seeing those more and more which is why I posted this. Tipping has gotten out of hand. It’s making me want to eat out less.
“I have tip fatigue”
So do I. Any more I just get take out so I don’t have to tip them. Plus I can eat at home in peace while I read the funny comments you all post around here.🤪🤪
Are you kidding?
It used to be that the only people who begged for tips were bartenders at strip clubs in Baltimore.
You weren’t allowed to say “No.”
… I’m told.
At stores that use electronic price tags and facial recognition and buy data on you and your finances you will see stories of people seeing the price of an item go up for them and be a lower price for others.
If I’m standing up to place an order, I don’t tip.
I had a hot dog once at a Shake Shack and it was the worst hot dog I had ever eaten.
I’ve never been to a SS, but looked it up online. “You order food at a counter.” And they expect tips?! Sheesh. NFW, IMO.
“I’m in NC and the Jersey Mike’s here, a sandwich shop, asks if you want to leave a tip on the screen when you pay. I say no.”
That would scare me if that happens before the food is prepared. Every “no” could result in receiving more in your sandwich than meat and cheese — and I’m talking bodily fluids.
I’ve been to more and more places where you order at the counter and they ask for tips while checking out. It’s insane.
What is WROMG with you?
Jesus was Jewish; do you have a problem with that?
