They’re struggling to foot the Z bill.
Gen Z can no longer afford to revel in the footloose and fancy-free freedom of youth, as nearly half of twenty-somethings are financially supporting both a child and a parent simultaneously, forcing most to tap into their retirement savings just to stay afloat, per alarming 2026 data.
It’s a tough break for the youngsters amid the surging cost of living crisis, a squeeze leaving roughly 70% of Americans in danger of healthcare, food and housing insecurity.
And these newcomers to adulthood are left holding the bag.
Oft-maligned as “lazy,” skittish brats with zero work ethic and deplorable money-management skills, Zoomers, age 29 and under, are now the second-most prominent demographic in the “sandwich generation” index, according to a new report via MyGuideToRetirement.org, a family and financial planning hub.
The sandwich generation, comprised of adults caring for their fledgling broods as well as their elderly mothers and fathers, is currently dominated by millennials (46%), folks in their 30s and early 40s, with a surprising 39% of Gen Zers trailing closely behind.
Tragically, the burden of being the breadwinner — covering grocery bills, rent and housing expenses, medical fees and subscriptions, health insurance, and in-home care or assisted living costs — is taking its toll on Gen Z’s soul (and savings).
“Gen Z, in particular, carries an unusually heavy emotional burden for their age,” wrote study authors, who surveyed over 1,000 US earners to determine the mental and monetary weight of providing for relatives.

There’s no war going on and there’s no draft anymore.
And how many of them chose poorly in terms of their career/education?
Well of course they’re (the white segment of Genz) are taking care of their GenAlpha kids (age 0-13) as they should. Hopefully they raise their kids better than their parents did.
Import the third world and you’ll get the third world
Boomers have been there and done that.
Life hack for future generations -
1) have your kids before 30 so they are grown before your parents get old.
2) learn the difference between ‘wants’ and ‘needs’.
No problem, socialism will take care of their dilemma.
What? Sounds like they are working but have big expenses with caring for aging parents and little ones.
A corollary: learn the difference between the smart thing and the fun thing, and do the former.
or just don’t add to the population at all and eliminate tons of problems.
Gen Zers is just stupid.
If your study selects out those with poor life management skills and does not relate this generation to other generations, I guess this is what you get. I’ll give the study a “D” for lack of meaningful data base and asymmetrical analysis.
Gen Z is aged 14 to 29. How much retirement funds could they have?

““Gen Z, in particular, carries an unusually heavy emotional burden for their age,”
My mom was born in 1933. She didn’t have her first pair of real shoes until she was 6. She worked in the fields and home garden along with her brother from an early age. My dad quit school in the 8th grade to work on the farm. Then, it was off to war.
I started my working life during the recession and high interest rates of the late 70s early 80s. Our home loan was 16%.
My sisters and I recently worked to have one of us stay round the clock with my mother until she passed away in 2022. When I wasn’t with Mom, I was keeping grandchildren. I was getting practically no sleep.
Don’t talk to older generations about a “heavy emotional burden”.
I’d say 99 percent of them.
How true.
Well said.
