WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has sent a memo to teams that addresses ongoing discussions around transgender athletes in women’s basketball.
“I know many of you have received questions in recent weeks regarding transgender athlete participation in women’s basketball, and I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention,” Engelbert wrote in the memo, which was sent Friday afternoon and obtained by The Associated Press. “I wanted to reach out to share how we are approaching these conversations at the league office and to thank those of you who have responded to questions from the media with thoughtfulness and professionalism.”
The memo said the topic will be discussed further by a task force of team presidents and general managers at a previously scheduled meeting next week.
In an ESPN article published last month, Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham voiced support for barring transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports. Cunningham’s comments sparked small rallies and protests in Seattle and Portland when the Fever were on the road last week.
There was a lone protester at the Fever’s home game against Las Vegas on Thursday night. Indiana visits Chicago on Saturday. Members of two conservative groups are planning a rally in support of Cunningham ahead of that game.
The league hasn’t made any public comments on the issue.
Engelbert wrote that the league will “always approach this topic thoughtfully, respectfully, and in alignment with the longstanding values of our league. Second, our player eligibility rules, unlike the eligibility rules of some other leagues and governing bodies, are collectively bargained. Lastly, preserving the integrity of our game and ensuring fair competition will always remain among the league’s highest priorities.”

“Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities”
Bring them on for a few years of memorable video.
The end of the WNBA.....
If I want to watch men play, I’ll watch a NBA game.
This is such a stupid discussion. I cannot wait until summer is over and serious things can happen.
A former #3 overall pick in the NBA who is around 6-10 and 260 has just declared himself Trans, they should be the unquestioned #1 overall pick in the WNBA draft and could potentially put up Wilt Chamberlain numbers.
The left’s own rules, intended to destroy the norms of civilization, are being used against them and they don’t like it.
That sounds like something that someone who does not know what she’s doing would do.
This would become must see TV if half of the men playing are there to make a point while being paid...though not much. Imagine the endorsements and campaigns using them as willing participants in the theater of the absurd. This is a Red Adair approach to ending the silliness.
Meanwhile - WNBA becomes the sports equivalent of midget tossing - which would definitely get more viewership than non Fever games.
Why even have male and female leagues at this point???
COMBINE THE TWO - EVERYBODY WINS!!!!
If a team believes their women and transtesticle players are good enough to form an entire team together to try to beat an all male team, I would definitely watch!!!
“If I want to watch men play, I’ll watch a NBA game.”
Next year, if you want to watch 6’10” 280 lb men squash girls, you can watch the WNBA. You don’t want to miss that.
It'll be the most entertaining sporting event ever.
“...who have responded with thoughtfulness and professionalism.” E.G.:
I’m too uneducated to know what a woman is (and I intend to remain ignorant).
Trans kids belong, buy why are males invading the coaching ranks?
My focus is on basketball. (Ditto for many mediocre male college players)
I would welcome a (man) on my team.
For the first time ever, I’d welcome cameras in the locker rooms to view the fun.
This is either a really stupid decision or the greatest marketing concept of all time.
I love this issue.
Jam penises down their woke throats.
Figuratively, of course.
Yes, Cathy Engelbert played Division I college basketball at Lehigh University, where she joined as a walk-on, scored 861 career points, and served as a senior team captain. College Basketball Career, Walk-on to Captain: She joined the team at Lehigh University and eventually became a senior captain under Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw. Two-Sport Athlete: She also played varsity lacrosse at Lehigh and served as captain for that team too.Stats and Honors: During the 1986 season, she helped win an East Coast Conference title and earned Second Team All-Conference honors, finishing her college career with 861 points and a .498 field goal percentage. I doubt Cathy ever played against men, so what the hell are you doing woman?
As is usual us women are our own worse enemy.
The transgender discussion is the only reason the WNBA gets any attention at all.
